  1. I live in CBUS. I was planning on heading to Vertical Adventures tomorrow some time since they are closed Fri for some event. I havent climbed in a while but wanted to get back into it. Once I get some gear of my own (wont take long) Ill definitely hit the Scioto with you as its on my way home from work.

  2. Yea 700 of that was the optic and that that and the fact that the weapon came with a standard A2 stock rather than the optional one pictured would make the one you gave as an example more expensive .  I really started liking the EcoTech sight on my M4 in the Airforce, much faster target acquisition than Irons (for me at least).

And the .338 SASS is bust, that one that I thought I found is .338 Fed not .338 Lapua, darn.  Really just want to build it for the unique, hobbyist and fun factor not to mention the SHTF potential.  I was q'd with BA and SA rifles in the AF even getting to use the Barret M98 and M98B back to back.  No matter how hard you try or how smooth you are with a bolt, target re-acquisition is hindered not only by recoil but by operating the action, this was especially a problem when dealing with a group of multiple targets.

I understand what your saying about uniqueness of a 338 AR platform but when you talk about recoil and action manipulation causing target acquisition problems on a bolt rifle, you don think your going to have recoil issues with  338AR? :) The chances of a SHTF scenario where you need the stopping power of a 338 in a semi platform is about slim to none. Besides, if you cant hit your target, it doest matter what caliber your running. I would venture to say that 98% of people could not hit a 12" target at 400 yards. Let alone do it on the first shot. A quality .223/5.56 is plenty accurate to 700+ yards with the right ammo/shooter. Yeah windy days beat it up at distance though. If you want something different, can get ammo for and is still  a bit unique, check out an AR in 6.5 Creedmoor. Its a great cartridge.

  3. Boy-o-boy, choices, choices with some really good input - thanks, guys!

I still haven't narrowed it down or committed to anything...mostly been checking out GB for anything of interest.

The FNAR's are priced reasonably well on GB but there aren't that many FAL's on there - just one of interest within my price range.

One M1A is under $1,400 - a new standard - and the prices go up from there for standards and Socom's.

The Sig is just under $1800 along with an Armalite, and DPMS at about the same price - the DPMS is decked out with lots of upgrades including a scope but that is not my idea of building something to your needs and expectations.

There's also a POF 308 but it's over $2k....a bit more than I want to spend but they're well built rifles with a unique AR bolt setup.

The other one of interest is a modified M1A with a SAGE stock for about the same price as the Sig and Armalite.

The POF is very nice.. But when getting into that price range you can always consider a GAP.

  4. The FNAR is about as good as it gets out of the box in that price range, the big downside is mags are 45 each which was the deal breaker for me.

I've been wanting an m1a for a while now.

Welcome to big boy toys.. $45 is nothing for mags when talking about Large rifle calibers. Hell my magazines for my bolt rifles cost way more than that.. If $45 mag is too much, you may want to consider sticking with firearms you can afford to feed.

  5. Sure, sounds good, I haven't had the jigsaw yet, just growing some of the morugas, ghosts, and reapers this year. If you need any let me know, a few go a long way!

Ours didnt do so well this year. Lasr year we had hundreds of ghosts which i love. I'll take some ghosts and would love to try the morugas if you can spare. Are those the Trinidad Morugs?

  6. Couldnt tell if they were pups or just tiny due to summer heat. Guessing thats momma there in the middle. For a hot summer she's pretty thick so they are definitely eating well. I have allot of yotes down by me. So many actually that in 2.5 years of living there, I havent seen 1 groundhog in any field or along side any road. The coyotes have cleaned them out. Very few rabbits, no turkeys, etc. Its just a matter of days if a deer gets hit along the road before the yotes will have it stripped clean or drug off. Last year alone I had pics of them on 3 seperate deer kills where they dragged it 100+ yards through a snow packed field. Pretty interesting when you see the the drag marks going across a field.  Then you realize they are 30-40 lbs each but in a pack (3-4 dogs) they are dragging 200+lbs of deer.  They are truly predators.

  7.  I literally have 10's of thousands of trail pics. I'm not sure what's going to win. But the ones winning are odd occurances. Not random big bucks or bucks fighting which I have those pics as well. So I entered the karate chop doe in the gander mountain photo contest. Go vote please, for mine would be nice. http://www.gandermountain.com/photocontest/#

I personally like the Dual eagle's fighting. A doe approaching a coon is currently winning. 40% of the points comes from voters than 60% of the points to win comes from Gander mountains judging panel.

I'm not big on hunting predators. Not sure why. Hadn't heard a yote in 5 years till a female moved in and had pups two years ago. They're not overpopulated around me and country yotes don't eat dogs, so I just enjoy hearing and seeing them. Maybe once the numbers r bigger I'll hunt a few.

Understood and I love looking at the pics as well. The point on yotes is they over populate quickly and have quite a home range. They also destroy the other natural wildlife. Get a pack or 2 of yotes in your area and watch the rabbits, fawns, turkey, grouse, pheasant, etc start to disappear quickly. They will also attack full grown deer. With you having 3 of them in that 1 pic, you definitely have them packing up. They need to be kept in check just like the other animal populations thus the reason for hunting them and also the reason there is no closed season. They repopulate quickly and are pretty destructive which is why the ODNR has open season on them.

  8. Great pics. I would love to come help you get rid of some of those coyotes..  Youve got some great deer out there and obviously a yote problem. I love dispatching those little bastards. Especially with night vision. :)

  9. You misread his post. He built the AR in 6.8 and is building a Semi-Auto Sniper System (SASS) in .338 Lapua.

Although I'd question the need for semi-auto vs. a good bolt rifle with .338 lapua, but to each their own.

Nope dont think i mis-read. He clearly said $2900 invested in his 6.8 build. I pointed out that was a shit-ton. I then also asked why he wanted a 338 AR.

  10. Guys, I feel all your pain as well but here is a little piece of advice. If you choose to go down the suppressor route, you need to understand and expect a few things.

    1. The wait times are long.. they are only getting longer.

    2. Once you buy it, you need to do your best to forget about it until its approved.

    3. If the delay is due to the ATF clearing Form 3's, Form 4's please dont complain to your dealer. They cant do anything about it and are in the same position as you.

    4. Suppressors are an investment in both time and money, . This is not an item that you can walk into a store, buy, and go use the same day. You have to understand it could take you over a year from the time you pay until you have it in hand. If you are not willing to wait these times, then a suppressor may not be the best investment for you at this time.

  11. A few things where I see them having a bit of an edge if they can pull it off. Being able to tie into ANT+ devices such as heart rate, alt, and speed will be a big hit for the adrenaline junkies. Imaging being able to see your speeds around a track, speed and heart rate while skydiving, etc. That is pretty cool.

where I think they will struggle a bit is its size. It looks 2X-3X bigger than the new go pro. That means more weight and space which will deter some. It will also be interesting to see the mounting options for it.

  12. I took things a little harder than I actually thought I was going to when the woman left. I tried to do the typical and replace her right off instead of being free for a while. That was dumb. Then ahit sit in and went down hill. I finally sit in the garage one night with a Very Large bottle of crown and a few good friends, completely stripped my VTX to peices. Fixed the issues and rebuilt her on a brand new frame. 4 pm the next I woke up drooling in the back of my truck, and 3 of my closest still laughing and drinking polishing the bike.

Sometimes you just have to pull your head out of your ass!

Yup, we've all been there. There is a local watering hole here in columbus that the owner pulled me aside and said thanks. I asked for what and he said, "Well youve basically spent enough money in here over the last 7 months that you pretty much paid for the new deck addition outside. :)
