any dealer for that matter, buy a shop manual, do all the work yourself, if you still cant figure something out, you have us
Did you read this post from the start? I was changing my oil and look where I am. I appreciate the advice...but I have zero confidence in any self-maintenance projects. Hell, I'm scared to remove the reflectors now!
-
OF all places you are going to take it to it has to be Hinds??????? dude your crazy. pay somebody on here to do it.
why am i crazy to take it there? They've done all the service on my R1 - 16k miles on it without issue. what horror stories haven't i heard?

happy birthday!

see if you can get the pan back incase this happens again. save youself another 300 bones.
Good point...nothing like having something to practice on. thanks!
-
Thanks to all those who responded.
I called Hinds...they quoted me around $300 for installation. I think I may just let them do the work. I'm a computer geek...not a mechanic.
jerm,
if I take your advice and do the helicoil...do I have to remove the pan to install the helicoil?
-
i dont see how just putting a couple washers on the plug will hold it in there if the threads are stripped
Me neither...but for $0.59 I'll give it a try!
-
go to advance autoparts and they have a spark plug thread repair kit made by helicoil you dont have to drill at all, and it works very well
Really?! Wow...thanks!
another suggestion that was given to me was to put a washer or two on the plug and try again. Thoughts?
-
couldnt he just heli coil it?
Flounder suggested this as well. I was skimming the instructions for a helicoil...my main concern would be drilling the helicoil and having metal shavings stay in the pan and causing engine damage. Thoughts?
-
Haha, yea. I would recommend you get help changing the pan!
Anyone wanna help with this project? I provide free pizza and beer (beer after the bike is back together)
-
The threads are stripped on the drain plug, or the oil pan? If it's just the plug, go get another one. They're cheap. If it's the pan, like Yota said you'll need to retap the threads. Not that bad. Or maybe find a cheap used pan?
It's on the pan. A new oem pan with gasket is under $150. I don't mind paying this. However, if i have trouble changing the oil...I'm sure the f'up the bike more by trying to change the pan.

Ok, I was changing my oil yesterday and to make a long sh*tty story short...I stripped the threads on my drain plug. Not the bolt itself...but the threads on the bike.
Besides for setting this on fire and making an insurance claim...how do I fix this?
-
Yeah its happening everywhere.. Even here.
I'm surprised by that. About 2 months ago, your company was considered one of the hotter companies during these down times.

You spelled loose wrong in your sig.
And he's using the wrong "your".

But, have you seen any noobies posting good deals yet? I havent, then again I'm a cheap ass sometimes.
+1
I haven't seen many good deals...but I like looking at their posts to see what the market is on certain bikes. With that being said, I haven't seen many good deals on bikes from members either. The gsxr 750 for 3500 seems like the best...

This was deff a good idea. Every other newb post i read had some shit they wanted to sell.. not like its devastating or anything. but just kinda rude?? I guess thats the word I'm looking for
Maybe poor etiquette. However, if a newb was giving away free money...would you care? A newb might have a good deal...and might be in hurry for cash in these poor economic times. I'd like to see a regular member on this forum take advantage of a good deal. I think I'm up to 6 cents...
I stripped my drain plug - HELP

Hey, thanks to all of those that responded. I did some pricing on bikebandit and parts (pan, gasket, plug, and plug gasket) would cost me around 160 + s/h (I don't know what the s/h would be). APCh8r had me call Iron Pony Yamaha shop. They're getting me out the door at $265...so I'm guessing that's around $100 in labor if I bought the parts myself. Now, they'll be responsible. Hopefully they'll do a good job since they're a new shop and want to make a name for themselves.
I'm asking for the old pan. I'll consider this my "heli coil practice pan".
Again, thanks to all those who responded. I'd do it myself...but with this cold weather and my obvious novice wrenching skills, I don't want to struggle thru this.
