If you have to ask questions like these, maybe you should research or not own firearms. From your initial question, to the further adition of you wanting a defensive weapon, to long distance, you sure changed your mind quite a bit. And if $900 is "a lot" for an AR15, you shouldn't play in the AR15 market. You need to make up your mind on what it is you're really looking for. The only defense a .22 will provide, is if you deem necessary to quietly shoot someone in the back of the head.

I guess the other portion of this I forgot to add, was making sure that you are somewhat familiar with these weapons and how they operate. Lately it seems everyone thinks it's cool to buy an AR15, just because. Yet, I would say over 60% don't know how to properly operate these rifles, let alone tear down, and last clear a malfunction. A little homework and some initial dry training will help in this.

There's a little more to it than that if you've actually read the conception to the production. I'm all about rifles that serve a purpose, not to mention the only thing AR about the rifle is the barrel, part of the bolt, and the fact it accepts M16/AR15 magazines. Don't get me wrong, I just bought an LWRC (in which I'll pick up in September), but I've been following this rifle ever since I found out about it. Personally, I need no reason to justify in it your eyes, but I bet I could bring the ACR out here to Afghanistan, and it would run like a champ. BTW, the FR500C Mustang is $125K, but it is an all out race car for a fraction of most Le Mans cars. It too was built for a purpose, yet I guess a $5K with a few modifications equates to the same thing.

Go rent them at a range. Shoot them at the range. Base decision on what felt right to you, and you are happy with. Buy said rifle. Your choices are quite different in their respect. Yes they are all magazine fed, gas operated, semi-automatic rifles based upon military issued rifles. As to your AR15/M16/M4 question: AR15 = Civilian Version of M16/M4 Family, M16 = Variants such as the M16A1/M16A2/M16A4 have been in service since the early 60's and feature a full length 20" barrel, carrying handle (M16A4 removable carrying handle), and a non-collapsable butt stock. Also the M16A1 was full auto, compared to the M16A2/M16A4 were only 3-round burst capable (aswell as semi-auto fire). M4 = Shortened version of the M16, based upon the Colt Commando which was issued during the Vietnam conflict, features a collapsable butt stock, and a 16" barrel. The M4 has 2 versions of it, M4A1 and the M4 Carbine. M4A1 = Full Auto M4 Carbine = 3 Round Burst. The large differences in AR15's on the civilian market is basically the materials it is made of. You will pay more for MILSPEC AR15's for good reason, due to the wear and tear it will take. I won't go into specifics for I would need another 2 pages, but I have a few S&W M&P15's and love them to death. With anything AR15 related, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. You buy cheap, and you will get cheap. Not to mention if you want to fire 5.56X45mm ammo or .223 civilian? It does matter for 5.56mm has a higher chamber pressure. Sig Sauer's 556 rifle is not very much like an M16. And if you found one for $500, you found a trigger assembly and bolt only. Try closer to $1,500. AK47 go Arsenal, or Saiga (if you find one) - They are the real deal AK's that will be around longer than you will. $850+ for a quality AK. AR15's are now accepted throughout the US now. There is a craze for these rifles now thanks to the Commander in Chief. One big reason is, it's America's rifle. Another reason is people like me who are in the military, or have been, it's very familiar. I know an M4/AR15 like the back of my hand. I guess the all to stupid reason people buy AR15's is for the cool factor. You can go hog wild on an AR15, get all the high speed goodies you want, and be the envy of your friends. Again, I say go to Blackwing or New Albany, rent these weapons, shoot em, and then base a decision on them.

Being in the same boat as you DJ, and being that my debt is non-existant, I will probably spend the money on myself. There's a good probability I'll be buying a newer vehicle without financing it. Parts of the money I'll put into my investments, savings, etc... But I always say I should pay myself first, so I'll be buying a few things that I want.

Like Brian said, if you're joining just to pay for school, don't even think about it. Sorry, but to me that's a bullshit reason for doing it. I've had some time in, and can tell you that there needs to be more of a reason. I joined in 02', so still fresh 9/11 and full of killer spirit. I enlisted as a then 12B Combat Engineer (now 21B) and been blowing things up ever since. I don't know what MOS you're expecting to go into, but I can tell you be ready to deploy overseas. Be ready to put your life on hold to perform your duties in a possible hostile shit hole. Don't get me wrong the student loan repayment program is great. Had a guy I served with @ FT.Hood that had all his loans from his Aeronautical Engineering degree paied in full. Now since I was active duty my GI Bill nets me more $$$ than what the National Guard gets with deployments. The National Guard gets a fraction of what the Active Army is entitled to. Now as far as becoming a commisioned officer, it's OCS (Officer's Candidate School) that you would end up going to. With a degree/college experience, I have to say it's in your best interest to get that golden bar. Granted with the lack of experience, an open mind is a must in my opinion, for a good officer. The only reason the DUI might affect you, is because to be an officer you must obtain a Top Secret clearance. Long story short, the Military is a commitment, not a gym membership you can discard if you want. As the recruiters will tell you (believe about half of what they say Army wise) be ready for a deployment. I'm on my 3rd, but I love doing it so it's no problem for me.

Run 93, honestly don't switch back to crap gas. I even run 93 in my Ram, so I'd stick with the 93. Don't get me wrong the 4.10's are cutting some MPG's off, but it almost sounds like your car could be a hair fat.

I thought the same thing until I looked more into it. Ambi-selector switch/mag release, gas piston operated, no rear charging handle, and not to mention the initial design and most the furniture is all Magpul. I REALLY want to fire one, but from what I've been told, once I get my hands on it I'll want it. Question is, will it be availible in the multi-caliber configuration that it was initially designed for. Or do I have to wait for the Masood to come out. Lightening the car is some ricer shit. Switch to synthetic fluids, check the plugs wires, filters etc... The usual tune up should clear some of your problem up. Not to mention look at the way you drive aswell. The more WOT, the more fuel you're using.
