  1. I may have injured myself a bit... I had some soreness in my left ankle PRIOR to racing. This has happened to me before, usually from something stupid, like sitting "indian style" and bending my ankle a little weird. Usually goes away in 24 hours, so I raced on it figuring it was nothing. I think I aggravated it a little struggling to clip-out in a panic situation. Feels like (what the internet is telling me is) a high ankle sprain. May have stretched the tendon that runs on the inside of my left ankle, behind the little "ball" bone, and then up the interior of my calf muscle. I can walk well enough, but not without some pain. Just been icing and hoping it feels better soon. Hard to rest it and still be an effective parent/employee... Trial this week will keep me off the trails until the weekend anyway. fingers crossed it feels good by then.
  2. 4th place in sport. There were zero beginners registered when I went to the table, so I did sport class instead. Fourth of four in my age group. I did beat a couple of guys over 40, and the lone woman racing 2 laps. I actually went slower this race than last race (by a minute or so), but I was pacing for a second lap. could have gone much faster my first lap, but damp roots and lack of warmup just had me feeling "blah" the first couple of miles. With pacing being less of an issue on lap 2, I cleaned all of the climbs I hiked on lap 1. The only place I dabbed was on the narrow hubcap trees, when my tire spun on their roots. great trail. Probably my favorite thus far.
  3. Lose means to misplace or forfeit. Loose means the opposite of tight or the opposite of contained.
  4. I stand corrected. In hindsight, I probably read that the land requirement was now 3 acres, and previously assumed it had been 2 acres (4 contiguous lots in many of the neighborhoods built in the 70's) I would love to get my neighbors on board for this, and then create a private agreement that says I would only hunt on my own lot, but my dogs and fence remove all motivation for the deer to actually enter my yard. There are 3-5 on any given morning in our backdoor neighbor's yard though. My parents have 5-10, because of my mom's garden. a swing set "club house" is an elevated platform, right?
  5. I only read the facebook post by the police department. I was under the impression that they went from a 4 acre requirement to 6 acres, without expanding the number of land owners who could be involved.
  6. not sure if Seven Hills amended their law, but i know Strongsville now requires more acreage than they did last year.

did i see this on the CAMBA page? Would love to do it, but the timing is no good
  8. i just got assigned to a jury trial set to start on Tuesday. this may royally screw up my weekend...
  9. I need coaches. Let me know what they say. Remind me what team she's on, and what discipline she's focusing on racing. My buddy Matt could probably go out and win the expert class, but I have barely seen him on a mountain bike at all this summer. He's been focusing on track riding, and then I am sure he'll throw himself straight into cyclocross as soon as September hits. He's just decided not to care about racing MTB
  10. a 6-mile MTB lap at the knob would be a nice little spin-out for her legs ;-) Or she can come cheer you on and drink beers while you sweat
  11. I have an Amazon Bell road helmet ($20?) and a $50 Giro Helix that is much nicer, and more mtb-biased. The retention system is better, and the rear coverage of the helmet itself is superior. I still wear the road helmet in the rain. It has a flashing LED on the back.
  12. @Isaac's Papa @jhawk @CBBaron Anyone else? The women's class was thin at the second round. Lyns could probably do pretty well. Probably better than many of the dudes. And don't try to give me any of this, "I just ride for fun" garbage... "i'm not in racing shape." You know who else isn't? 75% of the beginners. That's why they're beginners.
  13. also, Zoso (Zeppelin tribute band) is playing at house of blues in Cleveland on Saturday night. I'll be there, jello legs or not.
  14. Hope to see some of you out this Saturday. I am pumped. Beginner distance is usually around 6-7 miles, sport is 12-14, and expert is 18-20. I put in 18 miles of singletrack yesterday, trying to practice pacing myself. I rode to the trail, so I was pretty warmed up before I started my first lap, but my laps were 37 mins, 41 mins (with a stop at the bathroom), and 34 mins, which is a PR on that loop. I set multiple PRs on that last lap, which is highly encouraging, because that means both my fitness and my ability to maintain control of the bike while tired have improved Goal for Saturday is to win the beginner class, and then complete a second lap to dip my toe in the water for sport class distances, and see if I need to register there next round.
  15. I actually set my pressures before my ride. 3 laps on the red loop. Got passed by a couple of guys on nicer bikes. They did not drop me quickly enough for me to be jealous of their fitness. I wouldn't mind their bikes.
  16. Done. 8:00 at Huffman trails. Are there multiple places to park, or just the one?
  17. (currently watching track bike racing on facebook live while I finish up work for the week)
  18. that would be a little far... I did that Brady's run race near PIRC. Fun trail, but too far for this particular saturday.
  19. Where is that? I'm sure i can make her feel quite a bit better about her skills after she watches me fall over a bunch.
  20. I would be open to as early as sunrise (which is around 6:15 these days). The further we have to drive to get there/home, the earlier I would like to start. Goal is to be home before lunch.
  21. I don't think the rain is supposed to continue long enough to thwart Saturday riding. I want to ride. Will end up at Royalview if I'm alone, but wouldn't at all mind learning a new trail with someone who knows their way around somewhere else. I would go as far as Wooster (vulture's knob). the earlier the better. I have to maintain marital harmony by being a decent father as much of the day as possible, because I'm already cleared to attend "Western night" with my friends on Saturday at 6:30. (we watch Deadwood and drink whiskey and smoke cigars.)
  22. I actually like my cons for the spin bike... They're small enough that they fit into the toe clips really well. Just have to tuck the laces away.
  23. I use the free version of Strava on my phone (no external GPS or anything like that). I leave my phone in my tail bag, unless its' super cold out, and my phone shuts down on its own... Then i will keep it in my hip pocket or the water bottle pocket of my jersey (which I rarely wear) so my body warms the phone. I would look at my phone too often and probably crash if I had it mounted where I could see it. Plus I think i would cause the battery to drain more than necessary. Strava allows the screen to go black and 'lock' when you're leaving it alone. And yes, the pins on flat pedals will eat up running shoes. My trail running shoes have chunks taken out of the tread from riding my bike. I didn't realize this until I had already purchased clipless shoes, but I would have made that a higher priority if I'd noticed sooner. And I have scars on my left shin...
  24. I think people who pay $100 for flat pedals are burning money... Get some cheap aluminum flats on Amazon. Yeah, the bearings will wear out more quickly than a more expensive set, but you should be LUCKY to put that many miles on a bike without other components failing first. anything with adjustable pins, and a dedicated set of skate or riding shoes will work well. My clipless pedals are around $50, and my shoes/cleats were $120 at my LBS (a lot cheaper online).
  25. Join the CAMBA facebook groups. there is an "open" group and a "closed" group. If you say you want an entry level hardtail, you'll get plenty of options in your budget. I also feel like people in CAMBA are slightly less likely to sell you junk than a random on CL, since they can't remain anonymous as easily. I am all in for a group ride, but unlike @CBBaron I will be attempting to set the world on fire on a rigid fat bike, tackling the chunk All joking aside though, $500-$600 should get you a bike that's perfectly adequate for 90% of the local terrain. Almost every time I ride, someone comments on how slow my bike will climb, or how much I'll have to brake before ___________ section. The people making those comments have never passed me or caught up to make a second comment. That's not to say I haven't been absolutely humiliated by 50 yr old dudes with beer guts who have better leg strength and endurance, but they're not fast because they have nicer bikes, they have nicer bikes because they're fast enough to rationalize them.
