  1. worst ever? What about the girl who stole $6,000 from a bank, and then bragged about it on youtube? http://www.examiner.com/article/chick-bank-robber-brags-about-bank-robbery-on-youtube (she posted the video wearing the same clothing she had on when she robbed the bank... police recovered all but $30. I didn't read anything about them recovering the car she also stole, but given that she had stolen it by taking someone's keys, I wouldn't anticipate any damage; just a bit less gas.)
  2. I'm not going to argue with you very hard, because I don't want the thread to get completely off-topic, but that surprises me. I know those old chevy's have big 'ole V8's, but especially in the late 70's, I would have thought the emissions equipment really limited power. I'm talking under 200hp back in the day, and probably considerably worse now that it's 40 years old and poorly tuned. Combine that with the rolling-brick aerodynamics, and I am skeptical that it can reach 100mph. But that's largely irrelevant to the saga itself, I was just pointing to it as a media sensationalism, or exaggeration of the facts on the part of the police. Supposedly there are other witnesses coming forward, both from the Justice Center, and the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. I am hearing (yes, that's a rumor) that other people in the area surrounding the justice center are corroborating the officers' story that a gunshot or gunshot-like sound was heard at the time they claim. At the end of the chase, there are obviously a lot more witnesses, because it's a neighborhood, and everything by the JC is a business, so there aren't nearly as many people there late at night.
  3. The 300 is irrelevant to racing for now. At least with WERA, it's tentatively in D superstock, along with the EX500, which despite its age and noodle chassis, I expect will still be faster. the 250 class will be alive and well until there are enough 300's around to make them viable race platforms. That is unless Kawasaki starts paying stupid contingency money the way Honda attempted.
  4. Well, I may pass. The seller says he's firm on price, and I have my eye on an XR100 beater to learn some mechanics on instead. That will either be fixed, or become a parts bike for whatever xr100 runner I end up with. I'd love to grab the R5, but $600 eats into the budget a bit too much. I'll help someone else transport it locally if there is interest though. Would love to see it resurrected.
  5. The relatives claim the car back-fired and wasn't running properly, but then the chase reached speeds in excess of 100mph? That doesn't add up to me... I think the speeds are being exaggerated a bit. Maybe the police hit 100mph in pursuit, but tht car doesn't look capable of sustaining 100. No new info reported locally today; just old video of the female passenger resisting arrest and threatening officers in the past. Lovely individuals.
  6. hey now, downtown dayton attracts plenty of homeless and criminals.
  7. Sold the Honda, so I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket. a '72 Yamaha R5 350cc 2-stroke caught my eye on CL. Not running, and there are some dings and dents here and there, but it's complete. (CL link, until it expires http://cleveland.craigslist.org/mcy/3450644714.html) Is this worth a $400 offer, and paying $500? I don't get to do a ton of street riding, so a cheap bike is attractive. I had considered everything from a first-gen SV650 to a first-gen ninja 250 just for grins. Then I found this, and thought to myself, "well shit... If I'm going to ride a cheap, low-powered bike, it may as well be a cool, old cheap low powered bike that has some character, and is stupid-simple to work on." I mean, it's an air-cooled 2-stroke. I have been led to believe a trained monkey could get it running. (running well is a different story, but you get the point) so do it, or keep the money and avoid the inevitable headaches that come with a mild restoration?
  8. Miranda rights only take effect when you are 1) in custody, and 2) being interrogated. Police are allowed to "investigate" a crime to determine whether or not an arrest is necessary. You're not being interrogated until you are identified as a suspect, AND in custody. This is why your rights are read to you as you're taken into custody. If you don't want to cooperate with police, you can refuse to answer questions, but that will normally lead to you being detained longer than necessary. As for why people continue to talk after they've been read their rights, most people can't resist the urge to explain their actions. Even when they're guilty, they believe they can talk themselves out of trouble, or outsmart the cops. If you've been arrested, just politely tell the officers that you intend to exercise your right to remain silent, and that you will not be answering any questions without an attorney present. DO NOT stonewall them on basic info just to be an a-hole. If they ask your name, provide your name. Case law holds that identifying information can never be incriminating, so you're just digging yourself a hole with the ill-will.
  9. no. There was a news story on this a few months back. A handful of officers have installed their own, which is allowed, but they are not in all the cars. This has prompted budget approval for all 300+ cars to have dash cams or officer-mounted cams installed over the next few years. There will be an evaluation period to see which is more useful, the dash-mounted cameras, or those mounted on officers' hats or chests.
  10. I was not aware that pop-up campers could have plumbing, but in 30 seconds on CL, I found a 1995 pop-up in good shape with a toilet and clean water tank for $1900... If you have a pickup that will fit bikes in the bed (I've seen 2 bikes in a ranger bed...), that is probably just about as cheap as buying a decent van and pulling an open trailer. And I imagine sleeping in the pop-up is a bit more comfortable than even a well-appointed van.
  11. Actually it's being reported now that one officer fired between 30 and 40 shots, and another emptied a full magazine (17). So that's 47-57 rounds just between those two. The remaining officers averaged significantly fewer shots fired. That's a long time firing for whichever officer pumped off 30+ rounds... I timed myself earlier, clapping my hands 18 times for the first magazine, then givein myself a second or two to reload, and clapped 17 more times for the second mag. I forgot to rack the slide to chamber a bullet after my reload, and my time was still 18 seconds. That's an eternity for continuous fire, and to be honest, I wasn't even accounting for recoil, so I was clapping faster than I believe it would be possible to shoot...
  12. ^ that plus a small open trailer would be the cheapest route.
  13. Both victims will have hands checked to see if there is evidence either fired a gun. If not, things will get bad quickly.
  14. Gun or not, if the driver was attempting to run over officers as has been reported, deadly force to prevent that/those officers from being run down is more easily justified. If no gun is recovered, the police are in hot water, but as noted, it's not unreasonable to believe that they could have fired a revolver (no casing ejected) and ditched it some time during the 20 minute pursuit. Assuming there was no shot fired and no gun, why flee? I am betting both occupants were high. Both have criminal records, including 7 felony convictions for the male, and he has fled before. But back to the assumption that there was no shot fired, and it was a car backfiring - I don't think the police acted unreasonably by attempting to stop a car that they believed had just shot at them. Once the car was finally cornered, the occupants used the car itself as a deadly weapon, and deadly force in response was appropriate. The fact that 12 officers all thought so and fired at the same time is helpful or harmful depending on how you view things. If I'm putting myself in the cops' shoes, I am under the belief that the suspects have at least 1 firearm in the vehicle, have already fired at officers, and are now using the car as a weapon. Shooting until the suspect stops moving is a lot more reasonable when you're acting on that premise.
  15. Holy shit! I looked into that "go" trailer with the integrated tent. $8,000 You could build a nice enclosed 6x12 for half that. Yes it would weigh more an you will get worse mileage, but $4000 buys a lot of gas! I guess if you only have a small car, but damn...
  16. That's another good point - you have to really be honest with yourself about how it's going to be used MOST OFTEN. Buying a great camper that you sleep in 20 nights a year, but haul stuff in 50 times a year is silly... I personally think a cargo trailer is more useful, and sort of "tough it out" on sleeping arrangements, because that's the secondary function. I like the idea of that soft-sided trailer/tent combo, but my guess is that it begins to approach the same costs as a used enclosed solid-sided trailer. The only reason to go that route would be if you're towing with a car, but really need a place to 'camp.'
  17. I would add my $.02, but as others have mentioned, you really have to decide if shitter and sink are requirements. If not, then your portions open up a TON, and your price drops a lot too. The way I would personally try to avoid RV's and toy haulers, as I feel they are harder to resell an depreciate a lot. I would do without the bathroom and insulate a 6x12 enclosed, spring for a Honda genny, and then install heat/AC, lights, and a couple outlets.
  18. Mike, how are the front tire options for the DR? I assume you can't get true "street" tires in a 19" rim.
  19. I can't speak to MO law, but in Ohio, dogs are property. You can sue the cops, but you're only going to recover a bet minimal amount. My dog is legally worth his $150 adoption fee. Obviously he is invaluable to me. I don't know what I'd do, but it probably wouldn't be rational or intelligent.

    she is home!

I'm betting the 300 is pretty awesome for the price, but i have to say, the best part about the 300 is that it should drive down the price on the used 250's that much more...
  21. Then can we continue the other Supra talk? My dad worked with a woman who went to ridiculous lengths to get a red turbo with a manual... That car was shipped all over the damn country to get to her. I'll have to ask him if she still has it. She was one of those people who had a great job, no kids, and a husband making at least as much as she did, but they NEVER had any money. Used to piss my dad off beyond belief, and I finally understand why now that I'm (technically) an adult. My dad was busting ass, making in the low 80k range to support 4 kids and a mortgage, and this woman made more than him, PLUS her husband's income, and was in credit-debt. She lacked all semblance of fiscal responsibility, but she got a new Supra Turbo while his car at the time was a Probe GT (which was a fun car, but obviously not in the same class...)
  22. probably the more reliable route. A lot of factory turbo supras were "tuned" to shit by their owners. LBTS. GLWS.
  23. What about an EX250? I'd strip the fairings and install longer bar ends to protect it a little if its knocked over, but you should be able to find a running but ugly first gen for under a grand this time of year. 16" tires mean that bt45's are about the best rubber option, but they're fine street tires.

    wrecked bike

^ that is why I only have friends with good credit. My buddy's dad wanted to ride my first bike. I let him, but on the condition that I got to drive his '66 vette convertible until it was fixed if he caused the bike to need fixing.
