Free VPN?

So what say you IT folks. I know pretty much nothing about VPNs other than I think it helps add privacy while doing things on the Internet? Thought maybe this could launch me in to learning more and using one

I use hotspot shield when I am on public WiFi. It makes it harder for script kiddies to sniff your traffic. I wouldn't use it to cover your tracks if you are up to no good though.

I almost forgot. It can be used to get around content filters.
