Guest nevarmore
Hey I'm going with a friend to help him look over a '90 or '91 Mistubishi Eclipse w/ a manual trans. Did those years have transmission problems? What else should we look for as far as common mechanical issues? Thanks!!!
Conesmasher
You have to be careful on the AWD cars about the transmissions. The reason being, if the tires aren't slipping, and the clutch isn't slipping, it's going to find the next weakest link to slip, ie. the transmission. One other thing to look for in those cars that I know of especially if it is a 4g63, check to make sure that the timing belt work has been done. Those motors are notorious for broken timing belts. BOOST_ME
Keep an eye out for kicking the lever out of gear at high RPMs. With an AWD, ask if the transfer case recall has been performed. (Regardless of the answer, take a peak underneath from the passenger side and see if there's a definitive build up of oil burned on the exhaust near the forward driveshaft yoke.) Watch for sticky rear brakes, shaft play on the turbo (10mm socket w/ extension or a long phillips screwdriver will get the intake piping off--do before starting engine ), automatic seat belts falling of tracks (there's a recall for those too, I think)...that should cover some of the more common items. smokin5s
they are nitorious for the 2nd gear syncro to go south. Deffinately check out the transfer case...... have someone watch you outside the car... and get on it... if the turbo spools and smoke comes out the back.. that's a bad thing.... just the normal stuff. stealthmonkey
if it has DSM in it it will have transmission prolbems.
Guest nevarmore
Thanks for the tips. The transmission was shitty so they didn't buy it. My friends sister still wanted it though because it was "pretty"
dsm_sleeper
For some reason, when you modify DSMs and start beating on them regularly things break. Like if you start power shifting it all the time and launching it the syncros go or you break a shift fork or shred a gear. The timing belts even eventually break if you don't replace them. And if you don't line it up right when doing the timing belt, it won't even run right.
