Absinthe is more than a mild hallucinogen. The watered down stuff that they sell in other countries is a weak solution of the real absinthe.

 

Edgar Allen Poe was known to be a heavy consumer of Absinthe. Many scholars credit "The Raven" to one of his "trips". They also credit his eventual downward spiral into insanity to the hallucinogen as well.

Historians also think that the reason Van Gogh even thought about cutting off his ear was because he was on a 2 week absinthe binge
