Casper
Do you guys want the real scoop on it?? We had a long talk about it at work today. ESPN U is a specialized ESPN channel that mostly play obscure sports most folks don't watch (women's softball, Lacross, etc.). Basically, they went to the BIG 10, said "we want to have this one OSU game on ESPN U" Big 10 goes, ok, it's going to be $xxx dollars. Then they said "we don't want it to be broadcast on any local network either." At that, Big 10 says "ok, even MORE money." From what I gathered, ESPN had to pay quite a fortune to do this. This is a strong arm tatic by ESPN. Very few cable providers in the nation offer this ESPN U channel, as it is expensive. ESPN does not want their channel on a premium service, such as a sports package or digital package; they want it on basic cable. By doing stuff like this, it's an attempt to force cable providers to offer their channel. But the end result is that the cost of this channel would FORCE a cable company to charge more for whatever package they put it on. And for what, the one game a year they purchase?? Basically, if put on a digital or premium service, they would charge EVEN more than what they want for it put on a basic cable service. There are still ongoing negoations w/ WBNS to carry the game locally, and though unlikely, there is still a small chance of it. If that does happen, I'll be one of the first to know, and will post up that info. It is also looking like the Big 10 may take some flack over this deal, and rightfully so. Neither WOW nor Warner offer it, and Insight only on their special sports package (and are probably paying a pretty penny for it, that cost going to the subscriber). And I doubt WOW or Warner will ever offer it, simply because they don't carry any programming worth the price hike. Joe, you're on drugs. True story. http://www.dispatch.com/football/football.php?story=dispatch/2006/10/13/20061013-A1-03.html Disney owns ESPN, ABC, etc etc. They have a contract with the BIG TEN. ESPN is choosing to not air this game locally. Disney’s contract with the Big Ten allows the company to mix and match games with its various networks — ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN360 and ESPNU, said ESPNU vice president and general manager Burke Magnus. "In this case, we think it’s pretty justifiable which games ended up where," Magnus said. "We’re trying to serve a national audience. We understand the local furor, but the selection process is pretty standard. No large sums of money were paid to anyone for this. ESPN owns the rights. They're doing what ever they want. And they can do it again. They can choose where to air what games.

Although I understand that this game isn't that big (hence the decision), I wonder did the same thing happen to USC when they played their patsies for the last 3 seasons or did they still have local coverage. I hate ESPN. It's unfortunate they got the rights to Monday night football and not Fox or CBS, or I'd probably never watch that channel. LJ
To anyone with Insight Digital... I just spoke with them. You can order the package with the game, then drop it right after the game and only be charged for the time you have it, so it will cost approx. $1 to see the game at your home with Insight Digital. Good marketing and PR on their part

BloodRed
Don't forget the game will also be broadcast live on AM radio station 1480 I think.
OSUGT
I have a free preview of espnu at the momment, with my satalite. I am praying that it last throught sat. Eric, If you have Dish Network, you'll be fine. The preview runs through Nov 1. I actually called Dish Network and asked if they had this preview. They denied having it and I had to order ESPN U on a pro-rated basis. Basically it would have cost me 11 bucks to have it for 1 week to watch the game. I get home from work after the call and turn to channel 298 specifically stating this preview was in effect. So I call to cancel my subscription and 2 more people still told me there was no preview available. I finally got it straightened out, but it was a hassle. Nitrousbird
Joe, you're on drugs. They can choose where to air what games. I got my information DIRECTLY from one of the people in charge of deciding whether or not to purchase this. You are getting yours from a press release. Not only that, but do you really think the BIG 10 has no control over which channel gets what game? I'm sure every game, per contract, is APPROVED by the Big 10 on which channel "Disney" puts each game on. IE: Disney says "we want to put x game here, y game here, z game here. Ok or not?" It is 100% ignorant to think that the Big 10 would give up any and all control of how their games are broadcast. You can damn well bet part of their contract is negotiated based on what games go where. I'm sure there is also allowances based on team rankings and such throughout the season for a number of games, so it's not a rigid thing at the begining of the season, excluding key games, like what channel the OSU/Michigan game will be on, for instance. Do you really think the contract is as simple as "here's some money, we can do whatever the fawk we want with these games." If what you were saying were the case, why not put the OSU / Michigan game on ESPN-U? Pretty much the biggest college game of the year, and much more forceful way of getting cable providers to purchase it. Or they could have done it w/ the OSU/Texas game, another one that everyone knew was going to be a highly watched game.
CJINOHIO03
Well they are supposdely going to have more OSU football games on it this year and next. Guest Mushijobah
So lets beat this by broadcasting it via internet. Is anyone that is a nerd have ESPNU?
OSUGT
Update on the Free Preview: Went home last night and turned to ESPNU and it's gone! I go to the preview channel where it itemizes all the free channels from Oct 5th-Nov 1. Lo and Behold, ESPNU is gone! No doubt in my mind the folks at good ole Dish Network got wind of this little controversy in Ohio and cancelled the free ESPNU preview I was hot. Long story short...I called mentioned "misrepresentation, no credibility, bait and switch, Atty General's office" etc. The operator sent me to a supervisor who then told me that I was trying to get something for free and that previews are a courtesy. I called BS and told her I would have paid for it had it not been PROMISED to me for free. Then I asked to speak with someone who spoke English as a first language. This kinda freaked her out and she gave me the free upgrade till Nov 1. What a fiasco! If you are in the same boat, dont let them win. Make them give it to you! Plus the channel replays games all throughout the week and other sports. Diana

Guest MX3Chick
Well, at least you guys got to watch all of the last game. They switched the game to the Missori/ Texas A&M game durring the THIRD QUARTER!! I was pissed and called our provider & the station that airs it and was told it was a decison by ABC to do it. I couldnt watch the BG game, because it wasnt a big enough game to see here I guess. Ive been told that we should be able to see it here since they are playing IU. Ive asked a couple other people about it, and they've all said it was being shown on our ABC channel here. I hope so, because otherwise I dont have any way to watch it and I will be ready to shoot someone.
