Need help finding a movie title

And it's going to probably be pretty darn obscure. The plot as I recall involved a young couple purchasing a house in Japan, and discovering a ring hidden under the floorboards. In flashback style, the ring is revealed to have belonged to a woman who was killed by her jealous lover, who then killed himself, many years ago. Their spirits then take over the modern couple, and they repeat the tragedy again.

I have no idea who was in it, and only saw it twice, and that was back in the 80s, so you can see why I say it's going to be obscure. I know that it had to be from before 1984, because that was when I saw it, on HBO. It was also sub-titled, at least in the flashback sequences. I'm pretty sure it was a big studio film, not a small release, because it was on good film stock.

I don't recall much gore or blood, so it was probably a drama, not a horror movie. Anyone got any ideas what it may have been?

YES!!!! That's the one right there. Dang, I never even thought of comboing with the year as a term, wonder if that omission pushed the result past the first couple of pages returned. I kept getting pages of returns for "Ringu" and "The Ring".

Thanks Akula, you won't believe how badly that has been gnawing at my soul......
