the cost of blu-ray is supposed to drop drastically in the next year, so i dont think cost is going to be a big issue, plus the hd-dvd stuff has been around for a lot longer than the blu-ray with the first hd drive coming out sometime in 2005. if you look at the fact that the ps3 was supposed to ship with the xbox360, they chose not to becuase the blu-ray tech would put the ps3 price over $900 and now only a year later its down to $599. in the near future you will be able to get blu-ray and hd-dvd for the same price and blu-ray will offer 20 or so more gbs of storage.

i know in the past the porn industry was a big part of the final decision but that was back when porn and movies were all you could really get on those formats. but now we have the ps3 and computers that will also use this tech. and now with the internet the majority of porn sales is no longer videos/dvds. which the sales of the videos/dvds dropped by about 22% in 2006 alone.

The big deciding factors i think will be if the ps3 can get some good games and how popular it becomes. and the computer drives and their price along with the price of the media.

I have a 360 so I automatically go for HD DVD. The reason why I feel HD DVD will win as well is because anything as far as new format sony backs fails. Maybe not the best statement by me but look at their track record. Beta, UMD, Mini disc and a few others. All in all HD DVD is the one for me! lol Plus I have Pirates on HD dvd.

i would buy hd-dvd because i own an xbox 360

but i could care less who wins as long as i can get ALL movie's from ALL studios on one format

btw.......the storage size difference is now equal, with hd-dvd going triple layer and making each layer now 17gb instead of 15gb for a total of 51gb to blu-ray's 50gb, and it's still much cheaper to produce

I have read that blue rays have dual layers of security that use up alot of the memory, and hd disk are dual layer that have 25 gb and blue ray dual is 50 but nobody is making those yet. what sucks is that i have a 360; but i have to buy a 200 dvd player for the hd function to work. ps3 > 360 cuz its cheaper!

I just read on gizmodo that Toshiba announced for HD-DVD triple layer which nets 51Gb of storage to BD's 50Gb double layer, but BD has the potential to do 8layer 200Gb

Story here http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/hd-dvd-turns-it-up-to-51gb-with-triple-layer-goodness-228801.php

umm..........BOTH blu-ray and hd-dvd are NATIVELY 1080p!

and there is something showing that toshiba has created the ability to make hd-dvd's up to 10 layers

but lets just hope all studios decide to follow suit with Warner Bros.

HDDVD - Just a fair warning: you guys putting so much faith into Sony/PS are going to get burned if you pile up a big blueray disc collection.

The consoles don't nearly drive the tech trends that that sub-industry thinks they do. Not even remote.

Sony is losing that tech battle and are already exercising some strong arm corporate tactics to get Blu Ray installed as the defacto default. It didn't work before, won't work with Blu Ray.

Sony continues to not learn from their mistakes. The music industry, audio hardware, games... If they knew what they were doing there shouldnt even exist an xbox or wii.

The writing is on the wall.

Agreed. For Playstation only though. None of the other players in the market will adopt it for their consoles, and Sony's already lost the "tech licensing to taiwan" battle to hddvd. It's over. The industries just don't know it yet. But I can tell you this for free: the PS4 won't be bluray...

my bad...I was thinking players...Toshiba's original model only output to 720p. and now the HD-XA2 is still pretty costly.

I still say blue ray...we have too many of the big players now in the same corner...Microsoft & HP are the only real players in the HD court. Toshiba and Sanyo....second rate.

Blue ray is a Sony & Panasonic product with Phillips, Pioneer, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Dell, and other big boys on their side.

The movie studios will align themselves of course, but with Sony and Panasonic being such large OEM's in the PC and home theater world, one will have to wait and see who will ultimately come out on top.

I've been using our 50gb blue ray recorder and it's been flawless. We even have a 200gb 8 layer unit in Japan in testing. Not sure if HD has a recorder even out yet.

Not directly my area of work at Panasonic, but I'll learn more at corporate later this month.

I don't really think any specs will be looked at when people decide on this. I think many will see the term dvd in "HD DVD" and will just assume it's the next step up. Blu Ray, I think will be seen as some radical alternative through the masses and many will assume it's not at the standard. Either way I don't care because I'll have a PS3 soon enough and I already have a 360!

Exactly - its like firewire and USB.

Also, when you talk "big players" and backing - you don't need anybody else than Microsoft. Understand that Microsoft could buy every movie studio, Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, Pioneer, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Dell. Thats no hype, those are the numbers based off net worth.

Also, historically hardware manufacturers and vendors like those last listed take less than 1 fiscal quarter to do complete about-faces on technology offerings. They're geared for rapid response. Who they're sitting with is really an indication of nothing other than a recent kickback. They'll be on board with a product lineup for sale of whatever technology customers want to buy in less than 3 months.

  • 11 months later...

I have both, and I try to get HD-DVD whenever I can because I don't like they way Sony does things. But I've been finding more and more of the movies I want on the Blu-Ray side of the isle than the HD-DVD side.. :/

I'm just worried that once Sony feel that they have a lock on the HD movie market, they'll start wanting more royalties and movie prices will go up rather than down.

Remember, Sony is the company that thought it was a good idea to compromise the computers of all their *LEGITIMATE* customers in some strange plan to curb piracy.

Since I've yet to upgrade my HD TV from a GEN 1 1080i I have sat in the back ground watching and waiting. But this year is the year I'm getting a new tv. So it now matters.

Personally I would like to see blue ray win, Now this is going to sound stupid but, I own a 360 its cake for me to ad HD ability to it. But I want a second use for my ps3 I plan on buying when GT5 released.
