"Memory Steer" gearbox question...

'89 Bronco fullsize - 4x4. Fresh alignment.

Lets say you make a 90 degree turn or even a slight turn going down the road at any speed, after you are thru the turn and want to go back to straight (basically letting go of the steering wheel), the steering wheel should have resistance and want to go back to straight on it own, right? Well this thing wants to hold the turn, you have to turn it back to staight. Well the gear box had play in it so I adjusted the box (worm gear)to take most of the play out. Now it's easier to control but still holds the turn.

Is this a bad gear box? Tight ball joints? If I wasn't able to take the play out of the box I would say the gear box is bad. There is some kind on sensor on one of the power steering lines, near the gearbox. What does that thing do?

Any ideas? I don't want to spend the time/money on a new box and end up in the same situation.
