Reed44 Posted December 21, 2008 Report Share Posted December 21, 2008 I got a 88gt for a decent price but it needs a waterpump. so as I was attemting to remove it 5 bolts broke off. no I wasn't using air tools or a breaker bar the bolts were just that bad. how can I get this pump off now. I know I am going to have to drill and re tap but I have no clue how deep the holes are in the block. AJ Posted December 21, 2008 Report Share Posted December 21, 2008 lefty loosey righty tighty? go with what scott said. that sounds easier than drilling and tapping 5 holes. you could make more problems for your self if you don't get it center and then you could have 5 off set holes and the water pump could leak. Cordell Posted December 21, 2008 Report Share Posted December 21, 2008 Are you talking about a small block Ford? Just pull the timing cover off and throw it away. Find a cheap used one, or pick up a new one, hopefully you have some bolt sticking out of the block (I think a couple go into the block), and you'll be done in no time. XChris1632X Posted December 21, 2008 Report Share Posted December 21, 2008 If you broke the bolts holding on the water pump then their should be nothing fully securing the water pump on anymore right? If I understand correctly and the wp is just sitting on basically studs of the leftover bolts just slide the water pump off now. If you dont have the room and have to yank the radiator so be it. Then you can just go to sears and buy you one of those cheap mapp gas torches and it should be enough to heat whats left of the bolts and take them out with vice grips. See bolts at bottom through the pan, get those. Looks like a couple others, and it'll come off. You'll also have to get the balancer off. and guys think about this one. Its a piece of aluminum, and it sounds corroded as shit. Better off replacing it. Besides heat it too much and it'll be ruined anyway. I am just going to use jb weld on it because I can't afford a new one unless I really have to. I know it sounds bad but I don't have much of an option right now. I just have my engine down to the shortblock with the timing cover off i just took off the front 4 oil pan bolts then re did the gasket up there and put the bolts right back in no problems... Even a timing cover is a stretch right now. My girlfriend went crazy on christmas on our new daughter. Next weekend I have all weekend to work on it and that is when I am going back over there to do it. I also am putting nitrous on it which I am accuring from my friend. I would love to have some help, any is always better espically since you just did this. I have all kinda of tools and a heated garage.
