zeitgeist57
Wierdest starter motor issue ever... Since it got super cold yesterday morning, I can't turn the engine over. Get this...the starter bendix (plunger) pops and the gear engages the flywheel...the starter motor spins...but the GEAR IS NOT TURNING! Underneath with the TH400 inspection cover removed, I can put my hand on the torque converter and turn the flywheel by hand. When my wife hit the ignition key multiple times, the gear engaged but would not turn, even though the starter motor was spinning. Broken? Is it possibly because it's so cold outside? craig71188
Broken - I would guess the bendix/drive broke internally. Drop the starter and see. Haven't priced a diesel starter recently, but usually you can buy the drive as a separate piece.
Dave1647545494
starter drive you can buy a drive from napa and rebuild it or pick up a full reman starter at your favorite auto parts store
Awfulcanawful
starter drive is broken. Hite parts exchange sells them like 30 bucks.
zeitgeist57
Thanks, guys... I'm pretty good at shadtree shit...is this repairable myself? FYI, 6.2 diesel starter is like $175. :(
Dave1647545494
you have to take the starter apart and replace some of the parts in the nose cone try calling HITE they rebuild starters and alternators for a better price on a reman job

zeitgeist57
Thanks, Craig. However, as I sit here at the computer, I rebuilt the starter motor. It was a piece of cake, but there are definitely some steps you have to go through in order for the entire starter and solenoid to come back together in one piece. I will install the starter in the morning...too cold right now and I'm tired...
zeitgeist57
Rebuilt the starter...and it WORKS!!! :) Not a difficult job at all. It just sucked because it is absolutely cold as balls out there...
