Starter motor issue - 6.2L diesel

Wierdest starter motor issue ever...

Since it got super cold yesterday morning, I can't turn the engine over. Get this...the starter bendix (plunger) pops and the gear engages the flywheel...the starter motor spins...but the GEAR IS NOT TURNING!

Underneath with the TH400 inspection cover removed, I can put my hand on the torque converter and turn the flywheel by hand. When my wife hit the ignition key multiple times, the gear engaged but would not turn, even though the starter motor was spinning.

Broken?

Is it possibly because it's so cold outside?

Thanks, Craig.

However, as I sit here at the computer, I rebuilt the starter motor. :) It was a piece of cake, but there are definitely some steps you have to go through in order for the entire starter and solenoid to come back together in one piece. I will install the starter in the morning...too cold right now and I'm tired...
