TimTaylor751647545500
Doing a rear brake job on my buddies '99 V6 Mustang. Installing new rotors and pads. When installing the new pads, do the "rabbit ear" springs ride inside the groove on the caliper or press against the underside of the caliper? thanks guys
TimTaylor751647545500
I think I may have found my answer here - http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201853
Cordell
They press against the caliper, they are there for a little tension. I assume you are talking about the springs attached to the pads.
TimTaylor751647545500
Yeah. That thread I listed shows some good shots of what I was looking for. Bad thing is, the backside pad was missing (worn down a bit) and I don't believe the new pads came with shims to hold the pads in place. You can buy caliper harware at the parts store if yours is missing. Some higher grade pads come with it, but most don't.
Browning
I haven't seen a set of pads come with the clips for a while now. They sell it separatehttp://smiliesftw.com/x/cece_ugh_greddy.gif
TimTaylor751647545500
Yeah, that's what I just ran into. Autozone has the hardware kit for ~$15 for the whole set. Off to go get in the zone.
TimTaylor751647545500
Thanks guys. Much appreciated. Oh, and when I said there was no inside pad...there was no pad, no plate, no nothing. The caliper piston was riding against the rotor. Was making a lovely sound. They sell it separatehttp://smiliesftw.com/x/cece_ugh_greddy.gif I get it all the time at work, but like I said it has to be a high grade pad. We sell mostly Wagner Thermoquiets excellent pad, and usually has the shims included.
Browning
that explains it then. I usually get the cheap ones, or the step above

I would suggest new calipers if there is much damage.
Guest Hal
Really should be looking into new calipers if the piston was rubbing against the rotor.

TimTaylor751647545500
What had happened was that the backing plate of the pad was all that was left for a while and that must have been what "fell off" the car today. There wasn't any real wear on the face of the piston, so I just changed out the rotors and pads.
