Police at Dover Docks nab driver who replaced suspension with tennis balls

A driver who decided to save money by replacing his suspension springs with tennis balls has been fined.

The Opel Vectra was stopped at Dover’s Eastern Docks and inspection by Port of Dover police officers revealed the stack of balls where the springs should have been.

On September 4, the case was heard at Folkestone Magistrates Court and Rumen Petrov, 34, from London, was convicted in his absence for using a vehicle with equipment likely to cause danger or injury.

He was fined £350, ordered to pay £50 costs and a £15 victims surcharge. His licence was endorsed with three penalty points, and he was fined £175 for a lighting offence.

“Clearly the effectiveness of the vehicles suspension system had been significantly compromised and posed a very real risk to the driver, and other motorists,” said Inspector Neil Care.

“Petrov intended to drive to London and taking his vehicle off the road has no doubt contributed to road safety, not just within the port but throughout the south-east.”

I've seen them used as a fix on some silverado driveshafts. Some years have play between the tail shaft and yoke so guys will stick bouncy balls in the slip yoke to decrease that play.

Here's the TSB for it.

Bulletin No.: 01-04-17-004B

Date: January 05, 2005

TECHNICAL

Subject:

Clunk, Bump or Squawk when Vehicle Comes to Complete Stop or Accelerating from Complete Stop (Replace Rear Drive Shaft Nickel-Plated Slip Yoke)

Models

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add Cadillac Escalade (Old Style) to the Models section. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-04-17-004A (Section 04 - Driveline/Axle).

Condition

Some customers may comment on a clunk, bump or squawk noise when the vehicle comes to a stop or when accelerating from a complete stop.

Cause

A slip/stick condition between the transfer case output shaft and the driveshaft slip yoke may cause this condition.

Diagnostic Tips

There are several resources in the electronic Service Information System which can provide the technician with information on diagnosis and repair of clunk conditions, and fix the customer's vehicle right the first time without unnecessary parts replacement. Some of the documents available in SI include:

^ Symptoms - Propeller Shaft

^ Knock or Clunk Noise

^ Rear Drive Axle Noises (SI Document ID #700580)

^ Launch Shudder/Vibration on Acceleration (Replace Propeller Shaft and Install a New Pinion Flange/Seal), Bulletin # 02-04-17-001

^ Information on 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Noise, Bulletin # 01-07-30-042

^ Driveline Clunk When Stopping (Reprogram Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Bulletin # 03-07-30-028

Correction

Replace the rear drive shaft slip yoke with a new nickel-plated slip yoke.

I think it's a Saturn just different name in the UK. I think it's a good try, clearly it works and I have seen way worse cars on the road here in Ohio.

I'm sure it's a much older verison of that Opel.

Lol. The only thing I'd be worried about would be the ball tearing apart and getting into the transfer case.

its just rubber if it did get into it. and it would be very hard to get in there with the tight fit of the splines. no worries, plus my car drives just fine what do i care haha.
