If you lock up one side of an open diff, it basically turns into a 2:1 step-up gearbox for the wheel that is spinning, right? (EDIT: What I mean is that it effectively changes the gear ratio from say 3.73:1 for both sides, to 3.73:2 for the spinning side of a one-wheeler, doubling the rate at which the tire turns compared to normal.) And for my question about top speed in third, I heard what sounded like two upshifts, so he was probably in third, and he was building some serious RPM again when it blew, so I'm figuring he was close to fourth. So, he was close to topping out in third, take whatever indicated speed that is and double it to find the speed of the spinning tire. Looking at the rest of the car (hanging headliner, beat seats, rust, and a foglight hanging out of the bumper by it's wires) I wouldn't figure he was spending much money on his tires.
