TTQ B4U
11 years ago, a little guy walked into our house and changed my life. He was ornery, loved to jump, loyal as get-out and protective as can be to those he loved and was the most persistent little bugger I've known. He grew up with his adopted sibling that was a couple years older. He saw her as his mother as he was just 6 weeks old and barely weened when he joined our family. His name was Ares. "Sir Ares of Sedgewick" as registered with the AKC and Sir "Ares-Berries" as registered by my daughter who affectionately called him that as she would stroke his velvet ears. Ares was part of our lives as we began remodeling our new home, was there to see the birth of my son in 2003 and welcomed my daughter to the family in 2006. He battled a number of ailments over the years including cancer for the last 12 months. He did so without as much as a whimper. That all came to a change last week as I returned from a business trip. Thursday he lost the use of his left front leg off and on and added to that he completely stopped eating. I fed and nursed him day and night since helping him regain the use of his front leg and his interest in food. We went on to enjoy a beautiful weekend, celebrated my son's 7th birthday and took several long walks and laid in the soft grass while the kids played. I thought we on our way to a recovery. Last night after dinner, during another great spring sunset, he was wanting to take another walk. It was our last walk in his quiet little neighborhood. I won't pain anyone with all the details, but let's just say the night ended with a sad conclusion to our walk. I had to carry my 80lb son the last few houses after his collapse. He wasn't much for kisses over the past few years but I think he licked my face as he wailed in pain the whole way home. My neighbor and good friend Mickey came out and together we rushed him to MedVet. Sadly, my kids did see the event unfold, but are both doing pretty well with it all. With tears streaming down my face, I just knew it wasn't good and I think he knew it was time to say goodbye too. He was medicated slightly to mask the pain of the blood clot that broke loose and shut down his body mid-back to his tail. He was alert though and together we said our goodbyes. I've never had to put a dog down before. It's the hardest damn thing I've had to face. Especially when you go from a liesurely walk with an old dear friend, to making the decision, all in under 30 minutes. My other Boxer, Jasmine, died in my arms and was taken from us suddenly two Christmas Eve's ago. Sometimes I think it's easier when choices aren't there. Ares, he was by first son, from his wee-little 7lbs of weight. I stayed with him to the very end and had to make the toughest of all calls....to say goodbye to my buddy. I'll miss you my Big Boy. You had a great life and touched me in so many ways. Caring for you in the end was an honor. Sleep well and say hello to Jasmine for us all. We love you. Thanks for reading CR. This big cry baby is one sad puppy tonight..... I litterally have thousands of pics of my boy, but with very few online. Here are just a few as my way of saying goodbye to him. FormulaMatt
I'm so sorry to hear this Tim. As a fellow Boxer parent, I know how much love they have to give. It sounds like even despite the few ailments, he had a great, fun, and love filled life. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. RC K9
My condolences. I know how hard it is. I know it's cliche but it gets a little better as time goes by.
Pedro1647545510
My condolences as well. Pets become a part of the family and it's hard loosing them. This is one reason why I am hesitant to get another dog after our Rottweiler died last year.

CRed05
Sorry to here this. We had a boxer that looked just like Ares. We had him for a long time too until he finally died from natural causes. I dont think there is a better dog than a boxer. I've never cried over a lost pet until our boxer died.
