Protect and Serve fail

I've been sitting at work watching a Franklin County Sheriff clock cars for about 45 minutes to an hour on I-70 E at Brice. He hasn't pulled a single person over. 5 minutes ago, a PT Cruiser broke down/got a flat (surprise) across the highway in the far westbound shoulder. The driver has been waving at the officer for 5 minutes trying to get his attention, to no avail.

In my experience I often see CHP on the side of the road helpin people, at least with lights on to keep them safe. This guy is a cockbag.

which means that it is a public safety hazard and must be handled by authorities

If he helps change the tire on the PT Cruiser, the car breaks (which it will) and takes out a group of nuns he will be an accessory to murder.

Ive been thinking about this for a while and now im taking a really good philosophy class so im compelled to think about it. Ive seen cops stop and help(both men and women with flats) and seen them not. Not just OSP but ive seen county and locals do the above.

Ive decided while its a nice extra thing to do under normal circumstances(not stranded out of cell service, your not 200years old, or your out of fuel and its -50deg out etc) a flat tire and ones inability to change a flat doesn't constitute an emergency. It just doesn't. take responsibility and know how to change a flat. If you don't want to do that then get AAA.

And before any of you drop your 2 cents when was the last time you stopped, in your personal life, to help a stranger on the side of the road?

besides it a PT cruiser. Id stop and light that rolling herpes sore on fire while it was disabled

BUT, most of us ordinary citizens are driving to get somewhere, whether it be to work, etc. Cops on the other hand drive around looking for problems with no real destination unless dispatched.

When I was 19 on my way to beavercreek and saw a lady trying to secure a huge chair in the back of her pickup by the side of the hwy.

There's a reason people aren't allowed to just stop in the breakdown lane; its a safety hazard. Police are there to make sure that hazard gets cleaned up as quickly as possible.

They arent allowed to leave their car abandoned on the side of the freeway, no law saying they cant pull over momentarily.as long as every motorist is congnisent of the disabled vehicle it shouldnt be a problem. police are there to respond to emergencies. Besides, whose fault is it if she didnt secure the chair properly before she left? its her fault. shes not getting robbed, shot at, raped, or disturbing the peace.

^^ Best post in this thread. Agree completely. I also don't think the cop likely even knows she's there. He's clocking cars, listening to dispatch and likely not even aware that outside his running cruiser with air going, traffic zipping by and all the other stuff going on that she was even there.

Most citizens have cell phones. The chick needs to dial up her hubby or a a tow truck or AAA. Unless she's in a precarious spot, she's likely just fine and quite safe outside her car on the side of the road as she waits for help she has called to come take care of her.

1. According to SCOTUS the police are not required to protect individuals.

2. Often times it is against policy for one cop to do something about a stopped vehicle like that. They simple have to radio it in and another officer will come handle it. This is because it is not an emergency.

3. Excuse yourself from work and help them yourself.

4. I win.

PR is a big part of their job as well. At the same time its up the the officer how they decide to handle that portion of their job. Helping someone on the side of the road isnt required, its just something half way decent human beings do....

P.S. In the last 5 years I've helped change 3 tires, and let 2 people use my phone to call for help. I'm better than all of you.

Years ago I was stranded just over the crest of an overpass (dangerous situation) and had 2 different Sherrif cars just drive on by. And yes, I was blocking a lane and had several close calls but couldn't move the car without a tow truck. Let me guess that's not their job either.

In the end do you really think these red light cameras and speed traps are there for the public good? The answer is they are there to generate money.

If someone is stranded on the side of the road and gets taken out by a passing car and a cop is just sitting across the street watching, what then? At the very least he should make sure they are in a safe spot on the roadway, or off of the roadway for that matter, he should set out flares or cones or something to make sure that person is safe on the side of the highway. THAT IS HIS RESPONSIBILITY AND PART OF HIS JOB. He doesnt have to help change the damned tire but he needs to make sure that person is safe. And yeah Im sure he is listening to dispatch and clocking cars while a person has been waiving at him for 5 min and he doesnt even aknowledge. He is probably surfin porn on his iphone or sleeping.

we've already established its not his job. I'd rather make sure my tax dollhairs are going to discouraging wreckless driving and excessive speeds than changing tires for irresponsible people. talk about a waste of government money to have a $70,000 cop car acting as an interim AAA provider.

secondly how many times have you stopped to help a stranger on the freeway

c)what ever happen to taking responsibility for your own actions? No one but yourself put you on the side of the road. bad luck at best but don't expect to be bailed out. I though this was CR home of get your hands off my taxes so i can put a sizeable % of my paycheck towards zombie hideouts and guns? If your shit breaks down, runs out of fuel or you unfortunately pick up a flat then deal with it. If you don't want to deal with it pay AAA to. Be self sufficient, not a burden on society by tying up limited LEO's resources.

and 4thly if he gets smashed into its an unfortunate and sad situation. The driver of the car who hit him is obviously at fault. If he, the driver, is that distracted, he might have hit the cop and the disabled vehicle! now you have 2 plus potential deaths. You have to try, really try, and peg a car on the side of a full sized freeway berm.

oh wait i forgot how its cool to hate on cops. bruh

and PS aren't you the guy who tried to call someone out on being racist when someone said they had a mental image of what a drug dealer looked like?

Ive got a pretty good picture of what you look like, stud.

Your kidding me right??? And where did you get your law enforcement training at again? Since YOU established it was not his job. I did go through the police academy so you dont know what your talking about. And I just stopped and helped someone last year on 71N. You are truely lost and a complete douche. I fucking hate people like you. Its shit like what your saying that makes our world so fucked up.

Good for you. I've talked to actual officers (you know, the ones that are on the force, not just academy graduates) about situations like this. Read my earlier post and maybe you'll get what could be holding officers back. You go to the Supreme Court of the United States and tell them they are wrong. You know better because you just graduated from the academy. You know it is his responsibility to deal with that stranded motorist. :dumb:

As for cops driving by, they may have been on their way to a call. Most of the time that does not require that they have lights and sirens on.
