Car Insurance

First time I've ever had to care about what car insurance I have. I now have my first car that is worth a significant amount of money: 03 WRX. I live on campus, the car is parked off the street but it still remains outside, there is a significant threat of vandalism or theft. Mostly looking for just liability, uninsured and comprehensive insurance. I'm 22, single with one 5MPH ticket 2 years ago in Michigan. Quoted from progressive at $680/6months but that's just who has been carrying my minimum coverage on my past cars. It's not just about who has the cheapest price anymore, if I ever need a claim, my car would need to be fixed as good as it could be. I've been in the automotive repair industry for awhile and it seems almost all companies push for the cheapest parts they can think of. I've herd of unlimited bad insurance stories, but I don't know if I've ever herd a good story. Anybody care to share?

As far as I'm concerned its all pretty much the same. They all try to use the cheapest parts, but there are ways around stuff like that. I've always delt with body shops that I know, and they are always willing to work with insurance and I've gotten a few specific parts on my own before and had cash back and no deductible.

Having had Allstate, and now Progressive, they've both pissed me off, and they both have taken care of my claims without much issue. They are pretty much the same, I prefer the bigger companies, but I'd just go with who's cheaper.

I hope that quote is from multiple vehicles and possibly one on full coverage. I personally switched from Nationwide to Progressive since they cut my payment in half with some extra coverage on the vehicles ($0 deductible on glass).

But I will say, Nationwide did seem to do fantastic on claims. The guy we dealt with just asked for a quote from where ever the work would be done, and cut the check. Then I would do the work. Unfortunately, most insurance companies like to find places that will do the work for a good value to them. Maybe not the cheapest work, but not the best.

All I can say is, I have had great from Nationwide, but tends to be more expensive. Might just have to go around to local agents, get quotes, and then talk about how their claims work and who would do the work.

I've had insurance with State Farm Jerry Davis since I was 16. With a house fire and 4 car claims at the same time he did an outstanding job and went out of his way to help in any way possible. Its not just the company you're with per say but the agent it is through also.

State Farm Here. I'm nearly double your age with zero accidents and my last ticket 5 years ago. Each vehicle is under $50mo for full coverage with zero deductibles for both collision and comprehensive. Have never had issues with them when needed.

The quote is just for the one car, remove the bit about the ticket and it goes down almost to half. Thanks alot asshole cop in Michigan:dumb:. Atleast I only have one year left of having to pay for that ticket, I think anyway.

I've never seen a customer come in and change away they wanted their car to be fixed but then again I was never told the whole story just what I "needed" to know. I guess I may just have to get the cheapest thing I can find and if anything comes up I'll just have to strong arm them into fixing things the correct way? Sorry if it sounds obvious but this is just something I've never had to deal with before.

Nothing wrong with sending business to someone who's treated you right, but to be fair your rate would have been the same with any state farm agent.

We've been with State Farm for 13 years, My wife (girlfriend at the time) was hit in the Audi by an Uninsured motorist and we had to handle the claim throug our insurance and they never batted an eye when I demanded the car be fixed by Achbach and that the fender that needed replaced be an OEM fender.

Find the best price and keep the number of a good body shop handy. An insurance company cannot make you go to a shop they pick. And they cannot make the body shop use inadequate parts. Find a shop that will fight for you. I would recommend Auto Body Specialists on 5th in Grandview. Good people, active in the local SCCA region, and they will stand up to insurance adjusters.

And they cannot make the body shop use inadequate parts. .

Many companies have started moving towards charging you extra if you want OEM parts used in a repair.

They offer to sell you an additional option when purchasing your policy if you want them to use OEM parts but if you don't opt to buy that additional option then you have no leverage in saying what parts are used in the repair of your car.

...have to read the fine print on alot more things these days or at least clarify with your agent. Thankfully State farm will still use OEM parts as long as I demand it but don't expect it if you're not up front about it.

Wow dude that sucks! When I was 21, I had a brand new 07 Cobalt (full) and my 95 Saturn (liability) and insurance was cheaper then that. Not initially, two accidents (not at fault, drunk driver and dumb girl on cell!) and two 13 over speeding tickets had me paying out the ass for a while. Turned 21, and priced dropped a lot and dropped when I bought the BMW.

So like everyone else said, shop around. Get to know the agents too, because that can be a big factor.
