99FLHRCI
Have you seen these? What do you think of them? Looks like the biggest downfall is the ability to filter out salt? You could do that by boiling and collecting the evaporated water in a way which it would condense into a container.

Scotty2Hotty
If they're accepting GSA they probably have NSN's so they should work. The Gov't does have a few good things they buy.

HotCarl
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/CAMP360-1.html I have this one, not sure what the huge difference is. Ceramic filters a pretty commonly used, and theyre cheap. $20 for this one as oppose to $160 for the lifesaver bottle.
Trouble Maker
Ya, there are ones typicall used for backpacking all over for less and probably work just as well if not better. Not to mention they are usually more portable. http://cascadedesigns.com/msr/water-treatment-and-hydration/category Few people on my last trip had these and were raving about them. http://www.steripen.com/ I typically carry enough water in and just use pills/tabs if I need them. These would probably be a reasonable thing to keep around if you were worried about any reasonable situation that might arise. http://www.aquatabs.com/ These are what I have right now, they were just what they had at the store before my last trip. While I haven't used them yet, I'm sure they work fine. http://www.katadyn.com/usen/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-micropur/
Mojoe
Ok for short use, but it still will come down to replacing the filter eventually. Good for camping/hiking, for sure.
Trouble Maker
Ok for short use, but it still will come down to replacing the filter eventually. Good for camping/hiking, for sure. Which ones? Those steri pens are really cool. I think you would have to physical wear through the filter, as it's just a particulate filter. The (light) pen does the real 'cleaning' as it kills all of bacteria that may be in the water. Since it's just a particulate filter if you're drinking water source is clear of debris, you don't mind a few pieces of dirt, or you have another means of physical filtering, you don't even need it. The batteries are supposed to last for 100L of water (4 AAs) and the light will last for 4,000L. Every method is going to have it's drawbacks. Long term you will probably have to have some sustainable way of physical filtering and probably boiling. I would think any tool you use will have to be a short to medium term solution. That's why I said I think the tabs are a reasonable thing to keep around. Relatively cheap, simple to use and they work. Any other method is going to be much more expensive, probably bulkier and most people will probably never use it... are you really going to spend $100 + on that?
