New to MAC's.... what free apps are out there?

so I bit the bullet and purchased a used older MacBook... what free apps are out there games and utilities that will make me love MAC's... so far, it just seems like an expensive web browser and nothing else is overly impressive to me... Help convert me to the dark side.

get VLC and play any media file. handbrake for converting stuff. iLife is actually really good. Steam for games -- there are some mac games.

 

What do you need to do?

are these all free? I'm running snow leopard and when I bought it I was told it's a Core 2 Duo but come to find out it's just a Core Duo so it won't run Lion....

 

what's Steam?

 

I don't really need to do anything, I'm just trying to learn MAC's and see what all the hype is about.
