Anyone ever break their patella?

Well apparently I did.

After a night of drinking, one of my friends knocked me over and I fell on some concrete. The knee was swollen really bad and I couldn't walk on it, but the pain wasn't bad so I figured it was just a sprain, or at worst a partial tear of the mcl (happened to me a few years ago in the same knee).

I went to urgent care, got some x-rays, and they said my patella is fractured in two pieces and severely dislocated, and I might have torn a tendon as well. I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow, and I'm willing to bet surgery will be necessary.

Anyone been through this before? Any advice? What should I expect? It sounds like recovery is a very lengthy process.

I drink so that when this shit happens i dont feel it...whats your patella, the knee cap? my brother busted his into 3 bog pieces and a bunch of tiny ones when he was like 10 jumping rope at a family reunion. big 2" farm rope. Hyperextended his leg. Had surgery, nasty scar, spent first few weeks of middleschool in a full leg cast and a wheelchair

Thanks guys, yeah its the kneecap. It figures this shit would happen right in the beginning of the summer, just my luck

well, the good news for you is that bone heals to bone much better than tendon heals to bone. if i had the choice of a patellar tendon rupture, quad tendon rupture, or patellar fracture----i would choose patellar fracture first, and the other two much, much further down the list. its a common injury that most general orthopedists should be able to take care of.

if you want the name of a knee specialist, just let me know. yeah, your summer is fairly fucked---but there are a lot of worse injuries. you'll be able to put full weight on the leg, just no bending of the knee for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

good luck

Pretty sure I chipped or cracked mine about 2 months ago, its just now getting to the point where i can bump it into stuff and it does not send sharp pain signals to the brain. I was walking in the dark and tripped sraight over my 110 lb dog lol. Tried to recover and put my left kneecap right into the wood floors.

FF to 1 1/2 weeks ago, I broke the small toe on my right foot (on the concrete in the pool) lol, that fucking hurts to walk the first week.

Thanks Kirk, I appreciate the info

Kirk suggested me to the Ortho I ended up using for my ACL reconstruction and I'm very happy with the results. Even if I have to go to ANOTHER followup today, which I will take an hour+ of my time to talk to him for 2 minutes. :fuuuu: This is every ortho from what I understand, I'm just bitching here.

I'm also going to an excellent PT, suggested by another PT around town. Do pre-op PT, you will be happy you did.
