best paint to use on wheels?

The Duplicolor wheel coating sucks IMO... its like spray glitter.

I liked the VHT wheel coating from Jegs.

But for a plain 'ol black Rustoleum fits the bill well. Very durable too.

Key is in the prep... sand them a bit and use a primer. Also make sure not to paint them in close proximity to each other... overspray is a bitch.

Plastidip is nice since you can essentially do no prep, and it looks nice, and a child could paint it.... but it inst permanent whatsoever

My buddy painted his old subaru wheels with this stuff and it looks just like paint. I think he used two cans for all 4 wheels.

My vette wheels are plastidipped, you want to use way more than 2 cans on all 4 wheels. I would suggest 5-6.

The more you have on there the easier it is to peel off when the time comes.

but yeah, I like the look, my wheels were getting pretty bad looking since the previous owners never took care of them, and the plastidip really covered up everything and looks nice and smooth.

plastidip it and then paint what ever color you want over the plasti-dip

I've heard it doesnt peel off nice and clean if you do that. It'll still come off, but it will take some time. Less if you use stripper.

I just asked him again and he said he used 2 cans to the last drop to get 5-6 heavy coats on his 16" wheels.

I guess it depends on the wheels, how open they are, etc. I put 5 cans on my 18/19 vette wheels and its way too thin, I plan on going over it with a few more cans before I try to peel it off just to save time.

+1, that shit is TERRIBLE. Super glittery/metallic and the finish looks and feels like sandpaper. It's dry to the touch literally 10 seconds after you spray it.

just a little teaser pic seeing as my phone/lighting sucks. the wheels came out great. i ended up just going with some duplicolor automotive stuff, but i sanded the wheels down with 80 grit sand paper, then went back over with some like 300 grit i think to smooth it out. the rims then got cleaned up with some brake clean and alcohol. used some black primer, sanded with the 300 grit, put the gloss black on, then followed up with some duplicolor clear coat.
