Popular Post briansb
Hi everyone, I just moved here about 6 months ago from just outside Boston and have been trying to meet the local car people. I've met a few people the couple of times I've been over to Cars and Coffee (I was the guy on the Red Ducati 748S,) and everyone told me I need to join here as well, so here I am. Quick Details: Name: Brian Location: Dublin Occupation: Mechanical Engineer Rides: 2005 GTO, 2005 Grand Cherokee (3" Lift, on 33s), 99 Ducati 748S, "Formula SAE"/A-mod Auto-X car If you just want the pictures, skip the next few paragraphs. There are plenty of them! I have a M.S. in mechanical engineering from WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester Mass.) My senior and grad thesis projects were basically designing and build a single seat formula race car from scratch, it consumed a lot (read: all) of my time, and probably took a few years off my life, but it was probably the best overall automotive experience I've had. I also started a retail automotive business with my father back on CT in 2006 dealing in Tuning and DAQ equipment and tend to do a fair a mount of EFI tuning. Automotive related interests/hobbies: Motocross/Supercross (started racing when I was 5) HPDE track days and bike track days, Tuning. Hoping to get into some time attack and eventually NASA competition level racing in the semi-near future as well. Now for the pictures: My Ducati 748 with my buddies Monster 620 (my bike has some carbon fiber bits, full termignoni exhaust system, and custom tune with a full DAQ system). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/Ducs_Wach.jpg And my 05 GTO. Phantom Metallic Black w/ black/red interior, Pedders Springs (35mm drop), Hotchkis Sway bars, Catless/Magnaflow Cat-back, Monster Clutch/Hurst short throw, a bunch of tuning time, SAP grills, Monaro 427 tail lights and other Aussie bit, and ton of other things I am forgetting... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/GTO2.jpg And my formula car: Was originally a Formula SAE car then converted to run as a standard A-Mod autocross car. Runs a CBR 600 f4i engine, custom monoshock suspension setup with hand built chassis and a bunch of 1-off parts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/HIN_Nopi_NJ-2010/Side_rear.jpg And a bunch of other pictures: Some of me racing or building a few of the other formula cars I've been involved in, etc: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/rides.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/12_Frame_Weld.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/12_Dyno.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/briansb/fktmp1_0013.jpg Hope to meet some more of you guys around at some events this spring/summer

Mallard
Welcome, and nice intro. Surprisingly (or maybe not) the frame geometry doesn't look much different from the car we built my senior year. Nice toys.

briansb
Thanks for the welcome and rep everyone. Look forward to seeing everyone around Welcome, and nice intro. Surprisingly (or maybe not) the frame geometry doesn't look much different from the car we built my senior year. Nice toys. Not really surprising, lol. Only so many ways to package all the bits into a 60 to 69" wheel base and run 10 or 13" wheels while still managing to shove some unpredictable fleshy bits between all the controls. There are actually three different formula cars in the pictures there, though I had a hand in all of them. The first one (bright red one with the wing, #353) is the one I own. Typically double wishbone suspension with a monoshock front and rear and a 4cyl 600cc engine running through a quaife differential. The last car (the one in the rain, #108) is an older/larger car. It was our first go with the monoshock. Very reliable car. I am actually working on adding that one to my garage as well. The frame I am welding on is the one shown on the dyno - that was a radically different car. 500cc odd-fire inline twin snowmobile engine (Yamaha Phazer) running a CVT to a spool - on a solid rear axle with swing-arm suspension. Sounds odd for a formula car but the thing was light and fast and a blast to drive. Felt right at home for someone that learned to race on dirt : ) Formula SAE and the engineering/design of them (or any car really) have always been a big part of my life and I'll gladly talk to anyone about what goes into the design and help with any projects you might have. There are actually three different formula cars in the pictures there, though I had a hand in all of them. The first one (bright red one with the wing, #353) is the one I own. I always wanted to do FSAE, but only was able to my senior year (2005 competition). Our '05 car was similar to our previous designs, but was much better sorted. We got screwed and had to run our times in the rain, while others ran in the dry. We had the typical double wishbones front and rear, revalved mountain bike shocks/springs on each corner, F4i engine, and a Honda ATV diff in a custom CNC'd housing. Sounds like a fun A-mod car, though!
