Second Gen
Getting tired of maintaining the RX7 and thinking about a BMW Z4. Have researched on the "Net" and reviews are good as well as maintenance is reasonable (Understand I have supported a RX7 for years). Curious to know if anyone on the board has much experience with these and any feedback that is valid. As the "M" series are still a bit higher than I want this is not an option. Years - 2006 - 2008 (Reason I want the 255 HP with the 6 speed manual) Most have 50 K or less Let me know.. Dave
bmwohio
Nice cars, and fun to drive. Not to mention we make ALOT of parts to help modify that car We actually turned a Non-M Z4 into a track car and it MOVES around the track. I don't think you would be disappointed with it. Have you test driven one? I'll ping Kyle too, and have him chime in....... Here is ours on track: http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/541168_472015312820581_474913824_n_zps0e332e83.jpg?t=1374767360 http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/246417_472014746153971_1144232725_n_zps8f969406.jpg?t=1374767356 http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/Z4MidOhioTest_zps6eedb52f.jpg?t=1374767356

M0nk3y
Kale, did you use different bumpers on that track car? I spy a M front bumper.... Anyways, there really isn't too much to look out for. Most service related items are for the S54, and not the N52. There has been some minor reports of lifter tick, but that is usually analogous along the BMW line and nothing to be concerned about. The Z4M has problems with engine mounts backing out, the dreaded vanos failures that everyone claims is such a problem...even though I've personally never heard of 1 true failure, rod bearing wear, and 1-2 grind off of high rpm shifts. These are really all focused towards the S54 engine, and the platform itself is really solid. Besides an open diff, and power, the Z4 non-m isn't much different. The suspension is a bit softer, but that can be resolved. You can actually do a manifold swap on the N52 with a 3-stage DISA and gain 30-40 whp, apparently. The real only downfall for the non-m Z4 is that it has electric power steering, where as the M version has power steering. If you don't want a Z4M, don't drive one for giggles. It is completely a different animal and you will find a way to budget one.
