Moved just outside Albany NY (closer to family, mountains, lakes, rivers, outdoor activities). Bought house on 6 acres with only 2 car garage. Building a 4 car detached. Here is the house, a ranch style. My property is on a hill, at the bottom of a mountain. I had to have about 10 pine trees taken down, only $800. http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq342/xyster101/Garage/2013-07-30101738_zps926ee108.jpg Then since the project is going to cost more then $10,000 I had to have the plans stamped by an architect. So I drew them up in Sketch up and had them stamped. This will be built on a slope that goes up about 6', so I am making a 10" block foundation to hold the dirt up. I am working with my father in-law, but he is 3 hours away. So he will be doing most of the work, but lots of phone time planning these drawings out. In the last year I have bought 2 new cars, lost my job, sold my house, moved across 3 states, bought a house, got a new job (not started yet) and am building a garage. I don't have funds for anything bigger. The peak is already at 20', which is about 10' taller then my house. I was going to do 26' wide, but the joist and rafter cost went up a few thousand bucks. I would have to get 16" tall engineered joists over the 14" currently planned and I would have to do 2x10 rafters 12" on center, over 2x8. This thing is already going to cost over $40k as it sits with a huge discount on labor (father in-law). A big thing: I am going to be able to drive my 61" mower and ATV into the attic area for storage The door is 18' wide and 8' tall, can't go taller without raising the roof, which I don't want to do. Footers are done and ready for inspection tomorrow. By the way, how big is your garage? smokin5s Posted August 19, 2013 Report Share Posted August 19, 2013 Congrats on the garage build.... looks like it'll be a fun man cave... as far as garage sizes.... I have the standard 2 1/2 car garage attached to my house and then I have a 50x40 garage with 12 foot ceilings at the lowest point behind my house... (my almost 3 year old daughter was saying today, "This is mommy's house" and then pointed out back to my garage and said "that is daddy's house" I found that humorous. My wife agreed with my daughter until I told her look at the deed and see who the bank thinks owns the house... I won't that argument (and yes I know that because we're married that it's hers also...) as far as the height, unless you have a monster truck or are planning on putting a lift in it, the ceiling height should be fine... I would however plan on building larger than you think you'll need... I need more space in mine and I thought I was building overkill when I originally built it... also, run water out to the building.... I didn't think I would need it when I built it and now I regret it.... I will be renting a trencher next year to run water out there... also make sure to run data and cable tv while you have the trencher.... data and cable tv make it the cave and working on cars, I always need internet.... I also have a large area next to it I could put a nice lean to off one side for a boat in the future. Plus the attic is an additional 1125 sq/ft of storage space, so this building is going to be 2,250 sq/ft, which is more then my house! I will be doing water in the electric trench, I know it will only be 24" down (needs to be 4' here) but I am running PEX inside of 4" pipe, so if it breaks, easy to replace. I thought the same thing and now I'm wishing I would have built bigger... just saying... we had 3 cars when we moved in out here, now we have 6, plus a trailer and a camper... just saying... plan bigger than you would ever imagine that you'd need in your wildest dreams cause you'll end up using it. kirks5oh Posted August 20, 2013 Report Share Posted August 20, 2013 congrats. i'll have to post up some pics of my garage, now that i have added hot/cold water, and a urinal. i have a 12' wide, 12' tall door, and minimum 12' ceilings with 20' at the peak---its awesome. no problems with a lift. i'm also just under 60' X 40' with a 10' X 10' front office and a 12' X 12' rear 'cold room' storage for chemicals/lawn equipment/compressor, that utilizes a standard single car garage door Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
