Are you guys pitting Friday? I am coming home after the Dyno day to prep the Fam for the weekend- and will be back Saturday for TnT, and staying overnight to encourage as many Shootout Shenanigans as possible!

If you guys can leave a spot open for me Saturday I would appreciate it, text me later this week and we can work out the details.

I will try my best to save you a spot. If you just drive the car im sure we can squeeze you in. If you bring a truck and trailer, we will have to try to work something out.

I will PM you my phone number so you can text me. I don't have yours.

Some-none that I have thought so I have to wait for people to post stuff

So this weekend was the DSM shootout. If you guys have never been, make the trip! The Fastest GTRs and Mitsubishi powered vehicles in the country come out every year for this.

Car show and dyno day Friday

Race Saturday/Sunday. Unfortunately since the car is not a Mitsu or GTR, my run time was super limited to TnT

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_5405.jpg

Here is how the runs went-all runs at 17-18psi

First run-good launch-car is shutting down every shift. Feel like fuel slosh, but I have 5 gallons in the tank? 10.8@128. Also noted wide band was DEAD. Great, guess I am not turning it up. :-[

Put 4 more gallons in and take it out for a test hit- problem is GONE. Must have been shosh!! Man I need a sump!

Second run-roll out 1st and hammer down-car is all over the place but running well. Not thinking, I short shift into 5th AGAIN, and I have ZERO psi (the car was actually violently surging between 0 and 5 psi) so I toss it in neutral and coast through the traps....to a 10.3@136. :banghead: That was my 9!!!!

Next pass, I let her have it off the line, and snapped the drivers side axle. As a reminder, this is an NA LSD, so I am shocked it lasted this long as is!!

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_8238.jpg

Fixed the axle, and TnT was closed. They would not run it the rest of the night! Partied the rest of the night, and drove home.

I can say I have never been more disappointing to run a low 10 second pass in my life

Here are a few vids. the 10.8 slosh, and the 10.3 coasting through the traps in neutral. Sorry for the facebook link, I have asked the camera man to upload to youtube.

https://www.facebook.com/russell.sprague.58/videos/10153073595761984/

I was so annoyed that I botched that run, I wanted to see what 20+psi was like on the street. The car goes lean on the dyno in the upper RPM's over 20psi and my wideband was dead, but I didn't care. Maybe it was my pride? Maybe it was all the pork and beans from the PR track crew? Maybe it was the Coronas? Who knows, but that LS1 was in trouble.

When I was within 10 miles of home, I pulled over and gave the MBC a few cranks, here goes nothing! Test hit spiked just past 20psi. Like it :) So I slowed down to test a 40 roll. 40 in 2nd was 100% useless-I just buried the limiter. Lets try 3rd, more of the same. So I decided to do a 4th gear roll on.

It spun so violently that the car almost came around me at 100+. I had to lift and use the next 2 lanes over to get it sorted out. Glad It was 5am! I did a 3-4th pull with my foot controlling boost and let her have it in 5th. FUCK. I wish I had the Vbox because that was ridiculous.

Noticed the car was getting warm on my exit, but there is NO one out, and a mile of Blacktop before my street. So, I did what every other hooligan would do and did a 1-2-3-4 rolling burnout. By the time I got home, coolant temp was pegged at 250+. I may have tweaked the HG, but Im not worried. It gives me an excuse to but a HG, studs, and springs in it so I can spin it to 6500 and hopefully alleviate my boost drop issue going into 5th.

What a night!

So I figured between the car overheating from the fan switch failure at the track, and the full geechie runs on he way home, it was time to take a look at the head gasket. What I found may shock you-

PAPER GASKETS?!?!? LOL. Yes, I was making near 1000chp on a paper gasket and stock bolts from 1998

** I just want to note how PERFECT the piston looks- all the credit in the world to Erik@backstreetper.com for literally the worlds best LS1 tune!! i beat the piss out of this poor thing, and the piston looks mint and shows no signs of knock.**

And here you can clearly see where the HG pushed into the coolant passege, and torched the gasket. This is on #8

from #7 intake

I am assuming thats not normal? LOL Yup, went 10.3@136 coasting in neutral with THIS shit-lol.

Just in time for fall rebuilds lol. get her back together and enjoy it this fall!

Its all learning, and improving! I guess the factory push rods flex naturally above 5500rpm, so they are a "mandatory" mod for more RPM.

I really want the car to pop a 9 with the bunk rear end this year, and there are a few events on my radar so the fuel system upgrades may have to wait. I'm going to try and slam head gaskets, pushrods, Valve springs and revise the radiator and have it back on the road in the next 2 weeks.

JP, I f**king love this thread, man. Really envious of all the ups-and-downs you've gone through to get the car to where it is today(awesome learning experience).

It's a beautiful machine and even when you find problems, it's easy to see you're smiling like "Yup!!! Another reason to upgrade this part!" :)

Keep it up, mang! :thumbup::thumbup:

Yes even can use in the 4.8,5.3 it is the best one to use when going boosted

On a stock bore Ls1????? :p

Yeah I kind of hate it to be honest-I think its an easy way to lightly torch the head.....but maybe I am just burned/scared from my DSM days.....

I really cant believe people run them on 4.8s though, thats a HUGE difference in bore size!

Thanks! With cars, most problems are easy to find if you use logic really. I knew what was wrong with the car before I pulled it in the driveway. i am just shocked it had paper gaskets-and it lasted this long!! Besides building turbo kits for them, I am new to the LS platform, but so far I have to say-I love it. Stupid power-reliability, and pretty easy to work on. I am seeing now that its hard to do a full build on these things for cheap (or at least my kind of cheap!!). Even the minor upgrades I am doing now are more than I would have liked to spend on the car.

Im using the stock 5.3 mls for that reason. I know alot of guys ran the ls9, but they were also running the 317 heads.

What brand? OEM?

I may go the Ls9 route because the 5.7 is not that much of a difference, and my spare block is a 6.0-so I would need that bore size, and Im all about recycling. You know, its good for the environment. :)

Just saw a 7 second stock short block claiming the record.....Better step up your game.

In a 1500 lbs rear engine dragster! LOL

Im not going to get an SBE ET or MPH record unless I go auto, I know that. The only one that feasible to chase 6 speed is the T-56 record.

Finally had some time to get this thing back together.

First-I wanted to make some improvements while I had the top end off. Needed to reworked the vacuum system-so I "tapped" another barb into the back vacuum block. Now, everything has a separate boost reference source. This is very important, and often overlooked for most FI builds.

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150907_180457616.jpg

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150907_180511366.jpg

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150907_231823840.jpg

Onto the head improvements. Picked up a set of 703's (or so I thought, read on) for dirty cheap WITH dual springs (unknown brand or mileage, hence the just above scrap price) so I had the valve springs covered. China head studs from Jegs for $95, and I also was gifted a set of Comp 7.4 pushrods from a road Race team that just changed a set and was going to toss them! Thanks guys! Time for an MLS and more RPM.

Cleaned things up a bit

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150906_242259233.jpg

And get ready to install the 35$ a pair (not even kidding) GM MLS gaskets when I see...

THEY ARE NOTCHED HEADS?!?!?!?!? WTF?? These are not 703s! The numbers are ground off-but after looking around they are stock Ls1 heads. If you have no idea what I am talking about-read here http://www.ls1.com/forums/f7/mls-head-gasket-woes-89964/

So according to the internet, I cant use these heads with a GM MLS. If fact, I'd have to put paper gaskets back on to use ANY notch head. I'm pissed! Its 2am I went inside and had a beer.

Then, I remembered what this whole car is about-throwing caution to the wind and pushing the limits. So, I grabbed my trusty can on Indian Head and went to town.

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/$(KGrHqV,!pME8WpEGf9,BPS,W-wVLg~~60_35.JPG

I have used this crap to seal head gasket jobs that 100% should not work- and it has never failed me. Why stop now?

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150906_024220324.jpg

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150906_024225773.jpg

Note the extra sauce around that infamous "notch".

In goes the MLS, and I take the China studs until they felt "tight enough". Its about a 1/4 turn past 80 ft lbs-its a funny spot where they don’t want to turn anymore. Anyone who has put studs in multiple applications knows what I’m talking about.

Cleaned up the header gaskets with some sand paper

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150908_010353131.jpg

And slammed her back together.

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af154/coltboostin/LsxRx7/IMG_20150908_025515626.jpg

By this time its 6am, and time for a nap before work. We will see if the notch leaks in the morning.
