carl1647545492
I called my local Enterprise to get me "something better than the usual crap" ..so they turned up with a VW.Passat this morning..... Hmmm I,m not supposed to like this thing but after beating on it all day its a pretty good at freeway cruising and city driving for a little 2.5 5 banger and pretty quiet too. (Mafia types would appreciate the space in this thing its freaking huge!) It might be the air freshener gone to my head but I would consider buying one of these as a DD any reason why I should not? Mr. Jones
I daily a '13 Passat 6MT TDi. 50mpg , 6MT, 240ft/lbs @ 1700RPM. As roomy as most large luxury cars. Heated seats, and most other amenities standard. It's not going to raise you pulse, but as a daily, it's outstanding and the TDi aspect makes it cheap to own, and they just don't depreciate. Did ~2700 miles on a recent trip to Florida for vacation. Over the week there, and back, I averaged 49.9MPG. You just cant' beat that. BoostedAce
I'd consider a diesel cruze over that honesty, go test drive one they are quick.

Ryan218
I have a 07 Jetta with the 2.5 that I bought for my girl friend to drive. Been a good car minus it killing head light bulbs once a year. 2.5 isn't bad on gas. But not the best. Probaly more has to do with the way she drives. Agree with everything he posted....picked one up for the wife to DD for work (drives 100-miles round trip) and she's averaging 46mpg in Houston traffic with the DSG. Honestly, thinking about getting one for myself now... The diesel cruze is horrible....seriously awful. Agreed x2! Go drive a Cruze, they really are terrible! http://www.talkgold.com/forum/images/smilies/shit.gif

zeitgeist57
I've had my '00 Passat since new, and still going 176k miles strong. Though it's FWD, I have very few issues with the car. I am with Jones: the new Passat is a killer car, from a price/value standpoint. I drove the stripper 2.5L/manual and it still had dual-zone climate, bluetooth, and a slew of other options inside that massive cabin for $20k. The TDI is definitely the one to have. Supplicium
ive got the passat cc 2.0t, im a big fan of the TDi, 2.0T and 2.5 motors. VW has really stepped up the reliability since about 01. Im still averaging 450mi a tank on the 2.0t DSG I would like to get a Treg TDI next. Trouble Maker
I called my local Enterprise to get me "something better than the usual crap" ..so they turned up with a VW.Passat this morning..... I was just in LA with a group and we had an MB GLK350, GL450, Infinity FX37 and some forgettable extremely large american SUV. It was nice, especially since we weren't stuck in the american barge or the GL450. The GL450 was horrible, completely garbage. Doubly so considering the price. We were in the GLK350 and I was pleasantly surprised.

Otis Nice
VW has really stepped up the reliability since about 01. :bs: May be more reliable now, but my '01 Passat and '02 Jetta have given me more problems than any other vehicle I've owned including: 1991 Olds 98 1992 Tercel 1991 Prizm 1996 XJ 1997 Dakota 1978 K10 1995 Escort 2000 Elantra All of these ran high miles with little or no major probs. Just regular maintenance. Either sold them all off, traded them, or still own them. The VW's were/are the most finicky, highest maintenance cars I've ever owned. Worse than a woman. El Karacho1647545492
The diesel cruze is horrible....seriously awful. More for the Cruze part or more for the diesel part? Also, is the diesel still a VM Motori unit or is it a GM design? I always thought the 2.0L VM Motori motor was a solid powerplant, but I'm no expert. I always thought the 2.0L VM Motori motor was a solid powerplant, but I'm no expert. I was genuinely excited about the prospect of Diesel competition, until I drove it. The motor itself I'm sure isn't bad, but mated to that sloppy chassis, combined with an automatic who's sole purpose is life is to be slow and annoying it ruins the experience. You literally can't feel any more disconnected from a car than in a diesel cruze.

No MT with diesel?? Also, it looks like Chevy has transitioned away from VM Motori and is now using a GM "Family Z" diesel.
Mallard
VM was once owned 50/50 by GM and Fiat. Now it's wholly owned by Fiat.
Buteo
I too have a '13 passat as the work beater. No issues with it at all..just runs and gets great gas mileage. Not too shabby looking either for what it is.

Otis Nice
Did you buy them new or 100% know the history of the cars? Both used, I'll give you that, but both with maintenance records and a clean Car Fax. Could just be my bad luck with cars in general. I was thinking about what I posted. Didn't mention that a buddy rolled the Tercel and the Prizm (my first car in HS) caught fire on the way home from school one day, but that was due to faulty wiring from a super sweet system I had someone else install. Other than that, they were all great. That gen 1.8t is just prone to be problematic, or so I've been told by "VW guiz". Couple that with terrible electrical gremlins and you get one of the worst disdain for a vehicle make ever. I'm not saying others are/aren't reliable, but my experience has been absolutely awful. ...I should have never sold my Jeep.

Farkas
I'll never own another 1.8T, let's just say that. VR6, can't go wrong. TDI, can't go wrong.
