Hi there,

My name is Matt and I just moved to Dublin in December. I'm from Cleveland, been in south florida the past 4 yrs and now happy to be back in Ohio (aside from the snow!).

Been into cars since hs. Had wrx that I autoxed at the national level for a bit. Sold that and since have had Evo and s2000 and now my newest gem a 97 supra.

Looking forward to meeting some new friends and getting familiar with the local car scene. I'll be out at the local ovr autox events (spectating not driving and destroying my gem).

I don't have many yet...please ignore the cheesy wheels...CCW classics are on order!

Regarding autox, I'd say that's a common misconception. Recreational participation won't hurt a car, but running it competitively for 3 seasons straight, 20 events a season really puts a lot of stress on the vehicle! Launches (prosolos), hard acceleration, hard brake, and every corner pushing to the max grip of the tires really adds up. By the time I sold the Suby, 4 years after buying new off lot, every bushing in the vehicle needed replaced, we think the engine block was cracked (had an oil leak and replaced every gasket known to a Master Certified Tech that still didn't resolve the problem), and several issues with axles popping out of the rear diff, you could tell the car had seen better days.

If I get back into Auto-x again, it will be either as a co-driver, or buying a more affordable dedicated vehicle or kart.

It's not a misconception, you chose to not maintain the "suby" and let it deteriorate over time.

PS: Every bushing the supra is also beyond needing replaced, might as well have fun with it.

It was very well maintained with general maintenance...all fluids (oil, tranny, diff, coolant, etc), greasing of the bushings, timing belt, WP, etc). Shockingly, the glass tranny and clutch were still like new, but it was the rest of the car that was struggling.

By the end, the car needed an overhaul, simple as that. Forgot to mention all the misc rattles, and squeaks that developed...but I'm sure some of that can be attributed to the overall build quality.

Almost all serious auto-x'ers will attest to significant long term wear & tear from the sport, especially on dual purpose vehicles that are also driven through Northeast ohio winters.

What sort of racing to have planned for the supra if it wont' be turning?

1/4 mile?

Road courses are out, by your estimation, it would probably only make it 2 laps before it decomposed.

Factory tt 6spd. Bought from original owner 60yr old judge, bone stock except for wheels and only 58k miles. Plans are bpu. Since owning I've installed downpipe exhaust and intake so far.

No plans to race it, only drive it on weekends around town. I want to keep it long term in stock like form. Down the road, I'll get a dedicated race vehicle or kart.

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome! Check out Cars and Coffee every Saturday. Where in S. FL were you living? I was in Naples for 3 years and miss the area...but also happy to be back in Ohio.

Grew up in Shaker Heights as well; you don't want to move back to Cleveland EVER.
