Fantasy Football Thread 2019

I'm a bit late to the party this year, only started doing mock drafts yesterday and started reading up on players this week (I largely ignore NFL in the offseason) with a draft Saturday and Monday night.

How many drafts are you guys in? Any "must haves" or sleepers you wanna share?

I won my PPR last year thanks to drafting Sequon Barkley in the first and Christian Macaffrey dropping to me in the second then scooping up Mahomes in the 8th round. Needless to say there's no way in hell I'm that lucky this year.

I haven't really done any prep yet, mainly since I think I already pay enough attention to the NFL throughout the year, including the draft and offseason. I'll do a little reading tomorrow or Friday just to get an idea of what the "experts" are thinking, and so I'll know what to expect as far as where players are typically being drafted.

I've been playing FF since 1997, and nowadays I only do one league. It's a 12-team PPR (thru ESPN) with a bunch of guys who used to work together at Lowe's years ago. $30 entry per person, league champ takes the whole pot. All of us have moved on from Lowe's, but we still have kept the league going and it's an absolute blast. Everyone is competitive, and lots of shit talking. Our draft is this Saturday at the Casino; 97.1 The Fan holds a big draft party there with a bunch of tables set up for each league, and we really enjoyed it last year so we're back again this year.

Our league is a bit unique. It's basically a two QB league, well technically it's one QB slot and one "offensive player" but it's very beneficial to use a 2nd QB in that spot since our custom scoring rewards QB's a little more than the default. Here's the roster breakdown:

QB

RB

RB

RB/WR

WR

WR

WR

TE

FLEX

OP

K

D/ST

Here's the best part, it's a keeper league. You can keep up to four players a year if you want, as long as they were drafted the year before, and they are kept for a round earlier than the year prior. Add another round for each additional year kept. For example, I drafted Mahomes in the 10th round two years ago. I kept him last year for a 9th, I'm keeping him this year for a 7th, I'll keep him next year for a 4th, and then I can't keep him again after that.

It adds another layer of strategy, and rewards good drafting, especially if you grab a gem late in the draft. I drafted Juju Smith-Schuster in the 16th round a couple years back when he was a rookie, so I'll be reaping the benefits for many years. Also you can keep players that were drafted by OTHER teams too, so there's usually some big deals before the trade deadline when you have shitty teams trading a really good player to a playoff contending team that's willing to give up someone with potentially high keeper value. It really adds extra incentive since everyone is always playing for something, even if it's "next year".

I know that sounds nerdy and complicated, but you pick it up really quick, and it's so much fun that I don't have any interest in doing any other leagues anymore. I've made the playoffs 7 out of my 8 years in the league, but unfortunately for me, have no titles to show for it. I'm 0-3 in the championship game, and I have really shitty luck with my 1st round picks (which are always late in the 1st). For example, I drafted Leveon Bell last year (and didn't draft James Conner). Still kicking myself for that one.

wow that sounds... interesting. I could get into something like that but its def best with the same group every season i'm sure or else you have to hand off someone elses drafted team to a new guy.

This is the first year of one player keeper. No stipulations on what round they're taken but only one player can be held over. I 'like your league's strategy so everyone stays invested late in the season.

Yeah, it makes it a lot easier when you have the same group of guys year after year. Another thing that's cool about ESPN, during the fantasy playoffs you have the "consolation bracket" for all the non-playoff teams who are playing for draft order next year. Another reason to stay invested until the end no matter how bad your team is.

Here's the team I drafted, I think I'm OK with it. Mahomes and Juju were my two keepers.....

Ha i have the same TE, literally late in the draft and thought "fuck i forgot to draft a TE, well lets see who's left... Mark Andrews is probably the whitest name I've ever seen, great you're my new TE Mr. Andrews i guess".

Last draft tonight. Friendly .5 point PPR, 12 teams, 3 teams have never done fantasy football before so I expect them all to try and draft Tom Brady in the first round.
