On my soap box.

I am a relative new member here so I should probably just keep my mouth shut...

But that's not me.

I've had the pleasure to meet several Ohio Riders in person at a couple different bike nights. Everyone I've met so far seems to be pretty good people and I'd like to think that will continue with each subsequent member I meet.

My interactions on the forum haven't been as consistently gracious. Now some of you are going to say that I'm only spouting off now because I got a bunch of negative rep. To be honest, that is a bit true, but not in the way you think. I noticed immediately upon joining the board a very divisive clique culture. One that seemed to thrive on this "rep" thing. I thought to myself, "that's kinda cool, they've got a system to indicate what members are generally stand-up individuals." This seemed to be a really neat tool that would help new and old members alike to determine who to trust for advice or who were good people to deal with. To an extent this is true. Unfortunately this system is significantly abused when the inevitable forum argument breaks out. "I don't like what you have to say, I'm going to negative rep you and not sign it! hahahlolololrofl!"

I mean really? Is this what we've come to? I can't come to a forum and have a discussion with opposing viewpoints without a dogpile? Now the standard defense will be, "Nobody forced you to click on or reply to that thread." This I understand. Do we really need so much hostility? I also understand mob mentality. When kept in check reasonably, it's fine. Should the group react to someone that abused the generosity of forum members? Definitely. But do we need to keep jumping on his carcass once he's thrown in the towel?

I realize that my opinions are just that. I'm not trying to start a debate or argument. I just had to get this off my chest. I'd like to think that this could be a VERY successful forum. Ohio is one of the top motorcycling states in the country and having THE forum dedicated to that could become a very powerful (and lucrative :D) tool. Unfortunately the grating behavior of some long time members makes it quite difficult for new members to come in and gain footing. I came in with a wave of other guys from ADV and most of them joined and then never came back. Why? Because of all the stupid and petty fighting. Most people that join forums are quiet adult lurkers that will simply float under the radar and never post. If this site has a bunch of angry people all over the place, they don't stick around. Now you may say, "who cares? if they don't like it, there's the door!" but from an administration standpoint, membership gives this forum power. Power to generate ad revenue and the ability to get bigger and better.

So what do I want? That doesn't really matter. I'm just one voice jabberin (too much coffee today, I think.)

I do think the need for reputations should be assessed. Or maybe make signatures automatic? I think that would go a long way to relax some of the e-thugs.

You made it this far? Whoah.

Zach out.

This IS and WAS a VERY successful forum, even before you joined and got neg repped.

Just suck it up and deal. A little negative rep isnt the end of you eworld.

It blows my mind how much everyone has been bitching about rep lately. Quit yer cryin people. It doesnt mean anything. It just shows you if people agree with you or if they dont. Thats it. It doesnt mean you get less cookies.

I think you are exxagerating the "abuse"

it's just rep...people give you rep for statements they agree on, they give you negative for statments they disagree on. I've been a member here for over a year, and when the "rep" thing started, I was in the negative because many people disagreed with me on a thread I started. No big deal, I recovered...you can, too.

I only read a little further than where I snipped your whiny-assed soliloquy

Life's tough, cupcake. If your skin is as thin as your post makes it seem, you probably wont be around much longer anyway.

Go cry somewhere else.

Hey Zach, just don't worry about. Rep is nothing to worry about, neg rep, positive rep, who really gives a shit?

I don't. I don't think most people do, if getting neg rep really bothers them then they've got bigger issues to deal with, like getting a life!

Welcome to the interwebs.

Oh, and + rep left for you, just to make you feel better :p

Clam down now. I turned you green again then jagr added to it! But really the logs are checked and any bullsh*% neg reg is taken care of. Besides people with little or neg rep can't do much to your rep anyways!

I WISH!!!!

STFU Noob!

Realistically though, who cares. This forum is and will continue to be successful. If you don't like neg rep, keep your damn opinion to yourself and only surf the board looking for events. And yes, the people here are very nice in person. If you've ever been on any other forum that meets you'd realize that's how they all work.

You guys that think this is about my rep or whining either didn't read it or don't get what I'm trying to say.

It's about attitude.

I'm on many forums and they all have their badasses. The difference is that those forums consist of members from all over the world that will likely never meet. This place is different. I have met or will meet every respondent in this thread so far. Will those of you saying malicious things do so in person? No, probably not. If we meet, you'll probably be like, "hahaha dood i was jus jokin on that thread hahaha!" Why? What's the point?

I try to remember that many people have much different online personas than their meat space selves. I just don't understand treatin people like shit when you're likely gonna be riding with them later in the season. Or when you might need their help on the side of the road.

I'm a sarcastic asshole and I know I've said things that have rubbed people the wrong way, but I can say with certainty the things I say online I will tell to someone's face.

Then in all honesty I'd rather meet the first person

Understandable in a "let bygones be bygones" kinda way.

This may have happened when you met me last week. "Ohh, that's that asshole that was bitchin about my friends bike price, what a dick!"

:)
