Cheap, effective 4-wheeled vehicle that can haul a bike?

yea the paddle shifting or the little stick mode would be the same effect...i just prefer to downshift than use my brakes when conditions are bad...its more controlled IMO

and a clutch is still better than the sport mode because you can control how much slip, or simply put in the clutch if you lose traction, etc....but sport shift is better than nothing for sure

I think you missed the point - I don't care what your stuff cost, that's what suited you. Great. But you're hanging out with the wrong crowd if all those people do is try to one-up each other, especially if it gets to the point where they feel they have to advertise it to everyone. They have a self-esteem problem. Do they drive around with the MSRP stickers on their whips too?

Though I did find the uppity pic you linked kind of funny in an ironic way - coming from a past Saab owner. Don't care what you paid, those are wannabe yuppiemobiles.

mostly family members

what i was getting at, is that you can get a nice decent mileage reliable vehicle for 10k....you dont have to spend 40k to have something nice

people with that mentality annoy the hell outta me... because my 10k vehicle can be just as reliable and nice as their 40k vehicle, yet they will look down on it....but i bet when someone rolls up in a 100k car, their 40k car starts to look like a pile of shit next to it...even though previously, it was a sound car....thats what im getting at...just because something costs more, doesnt mean that cheaper vehicles are automatically junk

get a older ranger with the 8 foot bed. 2 wheel drive would be a easy load and unload since they set so low anyway. the 4 cyl get good milage and for the most part run good for a long time. Can get a six footer just get the bed extender on it or put one on it.

Considering what you want to do with it, another option to consider is a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari. 4.3 liter v6, full frame, available with either 2wd or AWD, factory rated to tow 5000 lbs, and if you pull the seats, you can load a bike inside. Nice, low mileage, well equipped AWD Astros are available for $4-6k and they're built like tanks!

Here is one guy's setup...

get a scoobi and a trailer. i love my 06 hatch back. 30 plus mpg with awd.

This is more than likely what I'll do. I'll just rent a small U-Haul trailer for track days (15$ a day is bearable) until I move to a place where I have space to keep a trailer of my own. A pickup would be nice but having back seats with the Subaru is a big plus.

I'm not in a huge hurry to buy, so I'm just going to keep an eye out there for the perfect deal to come by. If I can find a fairly clean, well-running, manual, 2nd gen Legacy Outback with less than 150k miles for the right price I'm going to jump on it.

I'm confused by everyone saying that if you buy a Ranger or an S-10, you'll have to leave the tailgate down to haul your sportbike.

I used to have a uber-cheap (no AC, manual trans., 4-cyl, 6-foot bed) S-10 that my father gave me when he was done abusing and neglecting it and it wasn't worth much. I hauled both my Speed Triple and Daytona 675 with the gate up and latched. I had to put the bike diagonally in the bed, and I had no room to spare. Wouldn't work with a cruiser. But with any modern sportbike, it should be possible.

Nobody ever coveted my S-10, but it was cheap transportation, for four wheels.
