Two reactors are currently believed to be in meltdown. The fuel rods are thought to be exposed and not cooling, but melting instead.

Japanese nuclear crisis escalates

By Jonathan Soble and Michiyo Nakamoto in Tokyo

...Japan is racing against time to prevent a potential nuclear disaster after a third reactor at the quake-stricken power plant north of Tokyo went into meltdown on Monday...

...Earlier on Monday, efforts to release gas out of the overheating reactor caused an explosion at reactor No. 3, although officials said that crucially its protective containment vessel had not been damaged...

This is just God getting back at Japan for killing whales!
Japan was suppose to host the World Figure Skating Championchips March 21-27. they are going to host the World Surfing Tour instead.

All three troublesome reactors are under control. Temperatures are falling. All three are probably permanently ruined.

CNN is reporting that there was a second explosion in reactor #2 about 2 hours ago.

Well if this wasn't already at the oh fuck stage.....a 4th reactor is on fire. Radiation levels are rising and the wind patterns for the next 18 - 20 hours will blow the fallout towards Tokyo.

Spoke too soon. The large amounts of water used to cool things down have steamed off into hydrogen gas and caused more explosions and fires in four of the reactors that are in trouble. In one or more containment pools, cracks are letting the water leak out, they think, they aren't sure. It might be the pressure inside won't let the water in. Either way, fuel rods are getting exposed above the water again, and are melting down again.

Which is leading to large amounts of radiation released into the local area. Danger zone now extended to 30 km. Tokyo is soon to be at risk. Earlier today the French told all their people to leave the Tokyo area. Part of that is the very large risk of an earthquake in Tokyo now. The other part is the French have a lot of nuclear reactors, and are a bit smarter about that.

If you're wondering, we're about 5 to 7 days away as the wind blows. Most of the radiation will be washed into the ocean by rain. Not all of it.

edit: And don't expect to buy a Toyota this year. The US production plants are scaling back and expect to stop production.

edit: 405 aftershocks so far...

More: It's not actually the reactor cores that are the most danger. It is the cooling pools for the spent fuel rods that have been removed previously. Those cooling pools are off to the side, and used to have a roof over the top of them, but that is gone now due to the explosions. These spent fuel rods will boil water if not cooled, and will gas off into the atmosphere more radiation than the core would if it melted down. Apparently a lot of attention has gone into cooling the spent fuel rods. In part, that has caused the problems in containing the reactor cores.

Im not a nuclear scientist so if somebody could put it in 'tard terms I would appreciate it. From what Ive gathered it seems like 4 reactors have started to fail(or failed) and are melting down(or melted down), and the radiation is starting to move towards Tokyo. How are the honda plants doing? There was a picture that showed the motorcycle plants on a map and it seemed like there was one that was far south in Japan and safe from the quake.

Watching CNN now. Dont think they have much hope? Inner sanctums of the reactors are cracked from steaming too much. One has the rods exposed. emergency workers are still inside that plant :nono: they are as good as dead and glowing.

These poor people are one bad moment away from chernobyl.

I know it struck me as funny (sick since of humor from too many years as a medic). But, they found a single infant girl buried in the ruble of a building and everyone is excited, granted she is a fluke of nature to survive a 3 day stint of being bried in the ruble, washed away in a tsunami and did not freeze in the middle of the night from being so wet and with out food.

Hopefully the effort was worth it and they can get the reactors under control.

It's the beginning of the end?

Sept 11th(NY) Jan11th(Haiti) and Mar 11th (Japan)...Luke 21:10-11 - Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven." Jesus says, For behold I come quickly.

It was good to hear from MIL personnel and engineers at Yokota AB in Japan that most of the US media outlets are sensationalizing the nuclear reactor situation. Pretty sure things are going to be ok.

This x1trillion.

US media sucks ballsack. The world is not about to end and we're not going to experience another Chernobyl. Nobody has stated what kind of radiation it is (which is kind of a big deal), it is probably alpha or beta and no gamma radiation yet. Gamma would be clusterfuck bad. Yes, the inner container is cracked, but there's a secondary and tertiary case over that.

It's alpha, beta, and gamma. Containment units are cracked. One has two holes in it. Radiation is starting to reach Tokyo. Not sure how this is good.

BBC's now saying radiation levels are falling.

IIRC, the half life of most of the radioactive by products of the now shut off reaction is very short, meaning they decay and heat up quickly over a few days then bleed off that heat quickly as they reduce in quantity and turn into more stable elements.

There's three containment units on each reactor. Which one is cracked? It was only the primary when i was reading into this yesterday.

There are two as far as I understand it, which is one more than Chernobyl had. The hydrogen explosions destroyed the outer cases of three of the reactors. Now the melting fuel rods are melting holes in the steel containment structures. Some scientists say when the fuel rods melt, that's a meltdown. Others reserve it for this, when the fuel rods melting start to melt through the containment unit. Either way, this nuclear power plant is in full meltdown.
