Vulcan_Rider
Brunstucky taught me wrong because I was always taught PEMDAS and to do it in the excact order, no left to right bullshit. Multiplication before division and addition before subtraction. I am not wrong by saying 2 all of my math teachers are wrong because I say 2. jessecwalters
Im going to ask my math professor today when I go to class. Im curious to what he will say. I would have said 2 btw. but i can see both answers
Steve Butters
i was taught in two school districts that PEMDAS isnt strict with the last 4...it could be PEDMSA if thats what the problem calls for...mult, and div. have the same weight, and addition and sub have the same weight.... it always goes left to right, you just have to do parenthesis > exponents > mult/div > add/sub....you can flip the mult/div and add/subi was thinking 2 originally because of what others said, i was thinking that since the 2 was right next to the parenthesis without any notation between, that it had to be distributed first inside the parenthesisi see how 288 is right, but i also see how 2 could be seen correct by people who are rusty on their math skills, like myself
ReconRat
To multiply in algebra, use the distributive law2(9+3) = ((2x9)+(2x3)) =2448÷2(9+3)48÷((2x9)+(2x3)) = 2Sorry guys, this is one of those cases where calculators will give the wrong answer. NinjaNick
48÷2(9+3)=lolDivision is the same as a fraction. So it's like putting the 2(9+3) under the 48. That's another way to look at it as well. It's TWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! wait...you were supposed to go to bed two pages ago!Got hung up proving myself right. Sapphy
I can't stop loling because we have 152 post about a math problem on a motorcycle forum lol. M is same weight as DA is same weight as SThe problem is not poorly written, but it could be written better.48/2(9+3)First the parens48/2(12)this could also be written as 48/2*12Now the question is do we do 48/2 first or 2*12 first. Since M and D have the same weight, we have to work left to right. That makes the answer
fusion
So I asked a coworker this morning that has a degree in mathematics and participates in algorithm challenges; he said it was 2 as well.

The 2(12) or 2*12 is in the denominator which makes it 48 OVER 24 or just 2. Edited April 12, 2011 by NinjaNick

I'm saddened how many humans mess this up Jeremi.
Disclaimer
Since when do "experts in their field" matter? We believe what policians tell us about jobs, economy, and the budget instead of the experts in the field that deal with those everyday so... why bother consulting the experts on this? The answer to this problem is Glenn Beck. Casper
2 is not correct. Sorry to break it to you all. And the distributive property of algebra would be fine... if you weren't skipping steps to get there.

It's just like 4 divided by 2 is a fraction. You write it either way! The second way of writing it is 4(numerator)/2(denominator) = 2Division is a fraction! That's a 2nd way of looking at the problem other than the way we others simply just saw that it was 2.
