 288 is not correct, and we're sorry to break it to you. :p

I'm literally laughing at my keyboard because it's always the little things that stir up the most shit.

I'm laughing because those who think it's 2 are still trying to prove it by altering the original problem.

I'm not! It's just like 4 divided by 2 is a fraction. You write it either way! The second way of writing it is 4(numerator)/2(denominator) = 2

Division is a fraction! That's a 2nd way of looking at the problem other than the way we others simply just saw that it was 2.

I agree that division would be like a fraction except that you would have 48 over 2 which would be your fraction and then multiplied by 12. Look at that you were kind of right yet completely wrong :D you know that the answer is 288

Wrong. It's the quantity 48/2 (your fraction) times the quantity 2 times 9+3.

No because it's not 48/2/(9+3)= 288

The original problem... it's 48/2(9+3)= 2

:thanksbutno::bitchfight: That is not how you would write that problem out sir!

:beathorse::lol:

Ok, from blue collar to white collar to teachers to mathematicians, there are all different answers with the mathematicians on the 2 side.

Lets just stop and move on!

No because it's not 48/2/(9+3)= 288

The original problem... it's 48/2(9+3)= 2

Your right it isn't 48/2/(9+3)= 288 it is 48/2*(9+3)=288

48/2*(12)=288

48 / 2 = 24 * 12 = 288

If you wanted to you could change it all over do multiplication which would be:

48 * .5 * (9+3) = 288

48 * .5 = 24

24 * (9+3) = ......... still 288

The standard order of operations, or precedence, is expressed in the following chart.

terms inside bracketsexponents and rootsmultiplication and divisionaddition and subtractionA common shorthand is B. E. D. M. A. S. which is: brackets, exponents, division & multiplication, addition & subtraction.

48/2*(12)=288

You did that operation there totally wrong. 48/24 is the next step.

So, my mathematician connection sent a text saying this, and I found it funny.

He said that engineers aren't the best resource for good math.

"A mathematician joke is that engineers do not do REAL theoretical math and this falls under true math, not just reading calculators....then stated that the ones giving 288 are morons." He said that it's so simple it shouldn't be an argument among other adults that have graduated High School. Also he wonders why the fuck this is being argued on a motorcycle forum?

I have nothing against you Tyler and others, but that made me laugh.

I love you all!

As well as many people with masters in their proffession are also wrong about many things. I think we are asking the wrong people here, ask a 2nd grade math teacher and see what you get.

The order of operations is nice, but things aren't always that simple.

48÷2*(9+3) = 288

48÷2(9+3) = 2

The guy next to me asked how many of these people that are saying 288 have math degrees?

Yes.

Just saw this one. Its 2. Not difficult at all. Just 2.

Yes.

Google says

....

and wikipedia says

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

48÷2*(9+3) = 48÷2(9+3)

No. Also, websites have been posted showing BOTH answers here.

Are you a TI or Casio follower? Choose wisely.

This is as important as Shell or BP.

I like how your mind operates.

Not sure where you get that. Did you miss the mathematical sciences professor from Otterbein's answer? He said 288.

The teacher on here says 288.

The engineers on here say 288.

My boss (math major with mba) says 288.

My boss's husband (math teacher at local high school) says 288.

My math professor here says 288.

The only people saying 2 are trying to change the problem to fit their answer. The answer is not 2. :D
