Not so Waterproof I guess.....

I just went on a little run to the Post Office and decided it be a good time to try out my new gear and its "Rain" liner. I have a Joe Rocket Ballistic 7.0 pants and a Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 jacket both which have 100% waterproof liners in them. The pants I just bought a week ago and they did their job of keeping my lower half dry. I just need to stretch them out a bit as they make it impossible to shift and or position my feet on the foot pegs without me feeling like I'm gonna tip over on the bike.

Back to the jacket for the most part its a good jacket and I wear it often. However its liner needs some attention my arms were soaked when I took the jacket off but my torso was dry how's that. I know your arms are out in the open but don't you think that Joe Rocket would of thought about that when they were designing the jacket liner? Is their anyway of fixing the problem or do I need to contact Joe Rocket or call Iron Pony where I bought it two months ago and see what they can do. Has this ever happened to anyone else with Joe Rocket gear.

What type of gloves were you wearing? Makes a huge difference in keeping water out of the end of your sleeves and blowing up your sleeve. Long gauntlet style waterproof gloves might help. Are there vents in the sleeves? If you do have vents is the wind flap closed right?

The Joe Rocket Phoenix jackets were never meant to be 100% waterproof in the first place. However they do a decent job considering it's a mesh jacket. I usually put them at about a 30-minute water resistance before they start to seep in certain places. Regardless of any jacket I've worn, the arms are always the first to go. I think it's because of the combination of the arms being more exposed to the rain in the riding position combined with the wind forcing the water into the fabric. The same thing happens to my Aerostitch touring jacket; if any area got damp first it was the arms.

There are some tricks you can do to help control or slows down the amount of rain that soaks like tucking your glove cuffs inside the sleeves. Other than that it's pretty much the rain suit or one of those 100% waterproof touring jackets, and those are super pricey.

If you're doing lots of rain riding, I would :plus1: for the Frogg Toggs. They're light, 100% waterproof, and most of all, breathable. They also pack super small (the 2-piece suits come with a stuff sack) so it's great for the long distance trips (and it's a great pillow in a pinch). When doing the big rides, it's just better to take advantage of the ability to keep everything dry. That way you're not stuck with a hairdryer in your hotel room hoping your stuff will be ready to go in the morning.

No the gloves I have are summer ridin gloves need to get some other ones. I mean my wrist was fine it was m like my forearms that were wet. The jackets mesh and no zipper led vents. My arms were the only thing wet that's what irritates me the most. I mean the pants have the same materials and my legs were cold but dry. I was only in the rain for like 20 minutes or so no longer than that.

Dude.. the water entered through your cuffs. If your forearms were the only part of you that was wet.. then the liner does its job.

Yea' date=' that was I thought that I had as well.

Missed the mesh part my bad. Yeah no mesh jacket is gonna hold out water for very long.

I was being optimistic when I bought it. Was like wow water proof liner that sounds good and you can remove it also.

i have a phoenix 4.0, I put the liner in the one time i got caught in the rain and my arms were soaked too. I expected that though with the gloves I was wearing and how loose it is on my wrists

If it's raining hard enough, you're gonna get wet to a point, all the gear will do is delay that for a while. I wore a mesh + waterproof liner a few years ago on a 2000mi+ ride that rained about half the time and I could squeeze water from my waterproof gloves and my forearms were wet, but the rest of me stayed dry.

That said, a lot of long distance riders seem to swear by giving their gear the Nikwax treatment.

I'm going try it when the silicone spray I've given my cold/rain gear stops working.

Frogg Toggs.... that is all

Raingear is the only waterproof that I have found. I don't like the Frogg Toggs due to the color selections. Unless they have changed they only offer muted color tones because they started as outdoor gear and made a crossover to motorcycling. When I rains the road spray grays everything out and that is bad for our safety.

I ride in the rain a lot and will only go with yellow or orange even if it costs a bit more.
