Lost my friend yesterday

After a hard fight with lymphoma my bestest buddy, Josey, left us yesterday.

He was diagnosed Dec. 2, and the vet gave him, at best, 1 month to live. Needless to say, these last several months have been extra special.

I brought him home from the pound when he was just a few months old. They had him tagged as a Shepherd mix. Turns out he was more of a Corgi/Blue Heeler mix.

He was fiercely protective of his home and people, but once he knew someone was cool, they were his new best friend. He had a contagious smile--I've never seen so many people smile when they would a dog...of course, it may have been the ears rather than his smile.

It is unbelievable how empty my house feels without him here. I will have a lot of adjustments to make. For almost 12 years, I've come home nearly everyday and eaten lunch with him. A nose poking through the door as soon as it opens then a wagging tail. A tradition that we had--he would sit up on his haunches and I would squat down and we'd talk about our day. I'll miss all of that so much. I'll take on another, some day, but no time soon.

Thanks, folks. The kind words go a long way.

I like my dogs better than I like most people.

I can relate.

If dogs don't go to heaven, when I die I want to go wherever they went.

Painful experience, the best to you and yours in a dark time - sorry for the loss man.

Maybe someday science will figure out a crossbred dna strand that give domestic pets the lifespan of a sea turtle......

I feel your pain Ive had 2 of my dogs pass away within a year of each other here recently. both of them had cancer and we had to put them down and they too were rescues one we got when I was in 4th grade after my step dad found him abandoned in a substation, the other was from a rescue place. They had good lives and are in a better place now and no longer in any pain.

Time helps with all things

Chance

The first to go with cancer was the rescue

So sorry to hear. I get choked up when someone else loses and dog and I didn't even know it. I had to put my dog down two years ago in April, I miss her as much today as I did then.

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner, his wife, and their little boy were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They felt he could learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

The little boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year- old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Sucks dude, only time I've ever seen my father cry, even with losing both of his parents pretty young, was when we had to put our last dog down.

Everytime I see a post like this and read it and look at my 7yr old pound mutt, I tear up. He lays by my side anytime I'm home and I can't shake him, he's attached.

Dad love's when we bring Basco home but he's only there for a few days at a time, and when he leaves dad always is pretty tore up.

Best wishes man, it will be lonely, but glad he lived a good life and you were able to enjoy him.
