  2. http://www.creators.com/print/conservative/thomas-sowell/who-shut-down-the-government.html Even when it comes to something as basic, and apparently as simple and straightforward, as the question of who shut down the federal government, there are diametrically opposite answers, depending on whether you talk to Democrats or to Republicans. There is really nothing complicated about the facts. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going — except for ObamaCare. This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the Congressional Record. As for the House of Representatives' right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that Congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity. Whether ObamaCare is good, bad or indifferent is a matter of opinion. But it is a matter of fact that members of the House of Representatives have a right to make spending decisions based on their opinion. ObamaCare is indeed "the law of the land," as its supporters keep saying, and the Supreme Court has upheld its Constitutionality. But the whole point of having a division of powers within the federal government is that each branch can decide independently what it wants to do or not do, regardless of what the other branches do, when exercising the powers specifically granted to that branch by the Constitution. The hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been laid off are not idle because the House of Representatives did not vote enough money to pay their salaries or the other expenses of their agencies — unless they are in an agency that would administer ObamaCare. Since we cannot read minds, we cannot say who — if anybody — "wants to shut down the government." But we do know who had the option to keep the government running and chose not to. The money voted by the House of Representatives covered everything that the government does, except for ObamaCare. The Senate chose not to vote to authorize that money to be spent, because it did not include money for ObamaCare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that he wants a "clean" bill from the House of Representatives, and some in the media keep repeating the word "clean" like a mantra. But what is unclean about not giving Harry Reid everything he wants? If Senator Reid and President Obama refuse to accept the money required to run the government, because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility. You cannot blame other people for not giving you everything you want. And it is a fraud to blame them when you refuse to use the money they did vote, even when it is ample to pay for everything else in the government. When Barack Obama keeps claiming that it is some new outrage for those who control the money to try to change government policy by granting or withholding money, that is simply a bald-faced lie. You can check the history of other examples of "legislation by appropriation" as it used to be called. Whether legislation by appropriation is a good idea or a bad idea is a matter of opinion. But whether it is both legal and not unprecedented is a matter of fact. Perhaps the biggest of the big lies is that the government will not be able to pay what it owes on the national debt, creating a danger of default. Tax money keeps coming into the Treasury during the shutdown, and it vastly exceeds the interest that has to be paid on the national debt. Even if the debt ceiling is not lifted, that only means that government is not allowed to run up new debt. But that does not mean that it is unable to pay the interest on existing debt. None of this is rocket science. But unless the Republicans get their side of the story out — and articulation has never been their strong suit — the lies will win. More important, the whole country will lose. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is http://www.tsowell.com. 11. I dont agree at all with how these tards were riding, and circumstances escalated way out of control on both parties. Sportbike stunting has been a growing trend for decades and has never been so popular, so it will surely be more and more obvious in public since the sheer number of stunt riders have increased exponentially. Are news crews completely brainless in that this is some sort of brand new epidemic? What rock have they been rotting under? From the beginning in mass production of motorcycles there have been ruthless gangs that would kill, mame, rape, and pillage.....but appears to me that these fucks are just playing around on public streets and highways. Sure, they may cause an accident once in a while but those statistics are vastly paled in comparison to dumbshits killing others by texting/driving, on the phone/driving, or just shitty driving period - so I see the same disregard to public safety between the two....and honestly, its even more dangerous in failing to control a car or truck than a bike due to the huge differences in destructive mass. And are they gangs? Stupid question since it's most likely just everyday groups and clubs that share interest in stunting....just like our OhioRider cliques that partake in group rides on twisty backroads, or touring, or dirt riding. Only, we choose to act as adults ( mostly ) and seems these assholes choose otherwise. Sadder yet, is that the public will likely again judge us ALL by our worst specimens

  14. Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!

  24. Well I'm a government employee and I am "required to report for duty" but the people whom process the payroll are considered non-essential so I won't get a paycheck for awhile. If they get this crap fixed by Friday I may be ok but otherwise it will be at least a month between checks before I get a paycheck. Luckily I pay most of my bills out of my first check. I've got a bit put away but after looking at the savings balance and the out going for bills and living essentials its a little scary looking ahead. I'm hoping if this goes on too long my car loan and mortgage company will allow me to defer payments without a negative hit to my credit. I've got coworkers that have scheduled leave (vacation days) scheduled for over a year and they have been cancelled. Even though they made plans to fly and paid for tickets they are still required to report to work. I will eventually get a check for the time I'm working now but I don't know when. It's hard to budget for that. Then when I do get paid its going to be on 1 check and in a higher tax bracket. So basically the government is going to make money off me. So Casper you know what I do if not I can PM you but what have you got job wise in my field? What's the pay look like? I like my current job and pay I get now when I receive it but wouldn't mind being back in Ohio.

  30. I didn't pay for a membership. I paid for a trail access pass. If I can't access the trails, I'm not getting what I paid for. Pretty simple actually. I don't find it lame at all, although I never bitched about anything. Simply letting you know your facts are not actually facts. For those who aren't getting a paycheck (for any reason, not just gov't failure), let me know what you do for a living. I'd be more than happy to help you find a job. If you are receiving a paycheck and the gov't failure hasn't impacted you, but you still use it as a pawn in a fruitless argument; get bent.

  31. Way to stereotype all Libertarians you douche. Also, Obamacare is a horrible piece of legislation. I think that everyone should have access to affordable health care. The problem with this law is that it DOES NOT make health care affordable. Premiums are increasing drastically in many places. Also, to force people to purchase insurance or pay a fine is completely unconstitutional and the SCOTUS should be ashamed for upholding such bullshit as a "tax". Cheech, to say that those who oppose Obamacare want to deny health care to the poor or less fortunate members of society is disingenuous and you know it. Come up with a better argument.

  32. The Divided States of America, yup that is what we have become. Federal Gov has too much power and authority, give most of that back to the states as it should be. I see some Mad Max shit coming in the not so distant future, we are truly a fucked up country now. Mr Obama is the must inept excuse for a leader this country has ever witnessed, he has done irreparable damage and the leaders of other nations just laugh their ass off at him and his minions. Obamacare will fail and it will not last, a buddy of mine is involved in the nationwide implementation of it, says the funding is not sustainable. I agree with a post already made, we must have mandatory term limits going forward, too many old fuckers that have been in forever, just building up that nest egg at "our expense". The President can only serve 2 four year terms, that needs to be the same for everyone across the board. Keep things fresh and productive, have new folks being voted in that may actually give a rats ass and who are not dead set in their ways and can actually work together for a change. Needs to be 3 parties beyond any doubt, all 3 with equal funding and no advantages due to deep pockets from contributors. Nothing but a turf war and a gang war, and the President makes no bones about it when it comes to what gang he fully supports.I would like to see a national shutdown, everyone just stay home and not do a damn thing....and I mean everyone. Doubt we could do that for very long, oh the chaos and bad shit that would go down.....just like if we had a nationwide catastrophe. Would something like that finally get them to understand on capital hill, that we the people are the United States of America......and NOT THEM?

  34. Unfortunately, any "revolutionary war" would have to made via economic means, because any militant/physical confrontation will be treated as treason/terrorism, and the US has one heck of a war machine. But since the people with $$$ are already in power, I don't see any change in the near future, unless there is some cataclysmic event (i.e. - collapse of economic system, meteor crashes into the Earth, Zombies, etc.) that relocates the power structure from those that have it now.
    1 point
  35. Only way the US will ever be fixed is another revolutionary war. Sorry but it's true. It's no where near what it used to be and what it needs to be to be America again. The 2 party system doesn't work, and its impossible to get a third party in office because there simply aren't voters for it.

  37. I wouldn't cry myself to sleep over that, honestly... Especially if they made it more like 6 bikes. I can't stand when large groups of bikes disrupt traffic by following too closely and essentially creating one monstrous vehicle. If you're riding with 5 friends, split into 2 groups of 3, and let the law require that you leave at least 5 car lengths between each group. Make the rules clear, and have a rational reason for their implementation, and what's the problem? Are you going to argue freedom of association or freedom to peaceably assemble? Because I don't think either apply on public roads. These "rally" rides and huge groups of riders do a lot more harm for our sport/hobby than they do good. That goes for public perception, and rate of accidents.
