My first Shoei This is one of the new Shoei Kato replicas that will be released on the 14th.

Something that was brought up in another thread, will a helmet save you from a gunshot. Had an old helmet to try it with so figured I would give it a go. It's a 15 year old beat up Shoei RFR helmet so no great loss. First shot is from a .177 caliber Crossman powermaster 66 airgun, no idea on velocity but it got all 10 pumps. Didn't go through, I had really expected it would. Second shot was .22 cal, an Aguila super colibri at roughly 550fps from a 6" Ruger MKII. No penetration. Third shot was a standard velocity .22 short, roughly 900fps with no penetration but it did crack the fiberglass shell. That's about as much firepower as I can let loose in the basement. Gotta say the old fiberglass shell on this Shoei is tougher than I had expected but I think if I could have stepped it up to standard or hyper velocity .22 that even from a pistol I would have gotten penetration. Until I can, or somebody else can get to the range and put some larger rounds into a helmet I will still hold onto my belief that a motorcycle helmet is a for shit form of body armor.

A cross bike will have a slightly more relaxed geometry than most pure road bikes, but still has the drop handlebars to get you in a more aero position. They also have wider tires, greater frame clearance for mud and usually different cable routing, all so the bike performs better in the muddy conditions of CX racing. Hybrid bikes are generally more relaxed still, with flat handlebars that place you in a very upright seated position. If you plan to ride mostly paved roads with a little bit of light dirt or fine gravel thrown in, a cross bike sounds like a good fit for you. Look for a used bike that's a few years old from the big manufacturers (Trek, specialized, giant, etc.) and you should be able to find something for around $500 that will hold up better than if you get a new bike for the same price.

Jokes aside...if a large group of bikers gets together to "stunt around Manhattan" (their words, according to one of the articles), they deserve to be arrested at some point. Riding through Times Square at 40mph wheelie-ing between cars is stupid. I don't care what stunts people want to do, but if you do it in *extremely* foot-traffic busy areas like that, you should have your bike taken away. It's beyond irresponsible and it causes a lot of injuries and problems. I'm blown away that some people are actually sticking up for these idiots. They brake-checked the guy after surrounding him and his family, and then forced him to a stop by surrounding him again...and then everyone is surprised and blown away that he gunned it to get away. Anyone that disagrees with that decision either doesn't have a wife and kids or has pretty messed-up priorities.
