It might not really be braking later as much as it is braking lighter for longer.

Yeah, that's what is going on in my scenario and in reality translates to braking later since your not into the meat of your braking until later. I'll i'm trying to point out is saying you'll only gain a tenth is misleading. For me being good on the brakes is the most difficult piece to master and is where I'm leaving alot of time still.

To further illustrate the point, out-braking the other guy by even 50' only gets you whopping tenth of second in lap time (goofing around in Excel I built this simple simulation of the back straight going into turn 6 at Mid-Ohio) ...

The BETTER method would be too ease off the brakes a bit (note only 0.9 G's of braking), and instead build your corner speed up by another 5 mph, and guess what you picked up almost a half second (-0.4sec) versus the other guy.

I think this oversimplifies what happens in reality. I've got aim solo data that shows me getting outbraked at the end of the backstraight and losing just under 1 sec in just that part of the track. I can see where both of us hit the brakes and it's within 50 ft. I also ran a faster laptime 1.33.1 compared to 1.34.5. When i first got the other rider's data I was losing 1.4 seconds a lap just at the end of the back straight comparing a 1.35.xx laptime to his. I've been working on braking later but still have lots of time to makeup. Seeing this data has opened my eyes on where it is the truly fast guys are making their times.

Arent those things damn near 200hp? I wouldnt be surprised if you were in the 190's.

200 HP would have been crank HP. 171 at the wheel with the ECU restrictions still in place makes 200 at the crank seem possible. I'd be happy with mid 180's at the wheel the way it sits. Someday I'll trailer it down to DTM and find out. I don't find myself complaining about power but I'd take some more ponies down the back straight at MO. The AIM shows GPS speed of 169. :)

  4. I broke my 15 R1 in on DTM's dyno very similar to that article. Bike had 30 miles on it when i got there. Restricted, it made 171 hp. Curious what it makes now being flashed and 'loosened up'.  Been ridden on the track ever since without any issue, roughly 3500 miles.

I've been listening to some coaching pod casts and have been learning about the process of improving overall and common places where people can pick up a lot of time (like getting a good drive onto the longest straight). A lap timer seems like a sensible tool for me to use to help myself improve.

GoPro helped me the most with this. Just hearing how lazy I was in some parts of the track helped me charge into corners harder and also pick up the throttle sooner.

For laptimer, I use an AIM solo dl now but had a regular xt laptimer for years. GPS is better if you can swing it as it gives you more info and can be sliced and diced whereas the xt only gives you a lap time. Xt can't compare sectors as easily as a gps unit will. You need additional beacons and I've never seen this done actually. The aim breaks each corner and straight into a sector and you can compare each lap. It also gives you a theoretical best time based on the fastest time of each sector. The other cool thing is you can compare a lap time from someone faster  than you and see where they are faster.

Looks like rain on Sunday and the track may not be the best with a high of 65 and lows in the 40s but we will have fun regardless.

Barber is fine at those temps. I was just there a couple weekends ago with similar temps. You can run pretty hard with the temps in the 40's there.

  7. Is the sub dual or single voice coil? What ohms are the voice coil(s)? If dual VC how do you have them wired, series or parallel? What load is the amp stable to when ran mono? You need this info to see if the amp is seeing load it can't handle. Also check your ground and power connection. Are you running sufficient gauge wire for the amp?

Wish I had the knowledge to recognize and know some of the history behind the bikes that were out there.  Had to wiki Wes Cooley, very cool!

Got a ton of video from the Sunday races, lot of it is garbage, some of it still needs processed, but here are a couple for now.  Nothing special, just shot with the bare gopro with my shaky hands.  The little bit of commentary is included free of charge:

    My best from Monday:

and a little Bacola action to finish it off for now:

Haha nice commentary. I tried but that kaw came out of the pits and got in between us.

Should of went to the shop brian recommended.

Yes, I took mine to CCM and they were great. I had one issue with it leaking coolant and they drove up to Columbus to pick it up and drop it back off. Turned out to be the O-ring at the thermostat which they said wasn't even apart. They also noticed I was running engine ice and refilled it with that and asked what type of oil I used. Told them Rotella and they said they stock it since a lot of their dirtbike customers use it so they filled it with that also. Bike looks just like it did when I dropped it off. They even wired my filter and exhaust like I had it. It shifts fine but I'll still be nervous until I can hammer on it at the track.

  10. Wasn't someone on here having an issue with this...previous to this recall that is.

Don't recall seeing anyone on here with an issue. Honestly I don't know of anyone personally that has had an issue. I've only heard of one racer that had problems and no one on the r1 forum reported issues so it's not a common problem. I think Yamaha is handling this well even though I'm not happy my bike has to have this done.

  11. I just rechecked the wera website and they published their Northcentral schedule yesterday. Its 3 gratten rounds and VIR. Plus vintage days where we dont qualify for. So no Mid-O or Pirc.

It says 'not complete working on more dates' for north central so hopefully MidO gets added.

  12. Clinton County and ask for Mike in service.  He's a solid Yamaha tech and they do great work.

And as far as recall, if there is issue with other things during the tear down and inspection, they will cover under warranty.

As far as lemon law, it has to be out of commission for 30 days plus to qualify or three times in service for the same thing.  Otherwise, you won't get it handled...

    anyone closer to cbus?

  13. is your bike experiencing any symptom of the bulletin for 3rd and 4th gears?

if not: they will not make repairs unless symptoms can be duplicated.

if so: factory warrenty will take care of the cost of repair, as long as you are still within your warrenty period

the campaign for second gear covers just that... second gear (and whatever else is in the outlined campaign bulletin)

the 3rd and 4th gear bulletin you referred to sounds like a technical service bulletin. which does not fall under the same category for repair authorization as as a campaign bulletin (whats commonly referred to as "recall")

dont freak out. every new vehicle, especially now days with our countries huge epidemic of entitlement and our sue happy legal system, has recalls. it wont lower the value. for instance: bmw s1000rr's had a recall on the crankshaft of certain affected VIN's in 2012. those bikes still sell for above 11k.

Nope they are replacing entire assembly. So all six gears are being replaced
