My first interstate road trip on the bike was a Patriot Guard ride to Flushing, MI. Probably about 5 years ago. Headed north on 23 toward Toledo well north of Delaware, 5am, 40deg, 75mph. All I can see of oncoming cars is headlights. I passed a semi and hung out in the left lane for a bit. I see headlight coming towards me around the corner but didn't think much about it at first. I learned to drive in the UK, and the strict rule there is you drive in the lane closest to the ramps unless you are actively overtaking... So I moved over to the right lane. At that moment I realized the headlights coming towards me were from a car travelling southbound in the northbound fast lane - he whizzed past me (75mph) and he was clearly running full speed (75mph) too. I thought abuout it for a second and then it dawned on me that if I hadn't switched to the right lane just a few second ago I'd have met that guy head-on at a combined speed of 150mph. Had to pull over and collect my thoughts before I continued the ride. These days I stay right as much as I can.

I'll check on prepay. If not I'm sure I can get a coil holder at wally world pretty cheap. And I could put my thin gloves on before I get to the toll booth. I betcha I could use that kind of coin holder if with my big gloves on.
-
Well, I know what the toll will be so I guess I'll just put that amount of money in a designated pocket at the gas stop immediately prior. Has anyone crossed the border on a motorbike recently? How much of a delay is it? Edit: Cool site here... hourly updates on wait times at various border crossings...

Looks like I can pay the Bluewater Bridge toll in US currency. I need to make sure I have plenty of quarters handy... http://www.bwba.org/toll_e.html Same with Rainbow Bridge from CA to USA at Niagara Falls. http://niagarafallsbridges.com/toll_costs_vehicle_definitions.php3 Anyone here paid tolls in cash before? How does that work on the bike? A shitload slower than in a car I'll bet.

I have a ride coming up in a couple of weeks and I'll be taking toll roads in the US and Canada. How do you get set up for paying tolls on a bike? Stop / remove gloves / dig for loose change? Also, can you pay the Canadian tolls in US currency? Like on I94 from MI into ONT which is listed as a toll road..?

OK, it's decided. Sat October 30th I'm riding a loop around Erie. Delaware -> Toledo -> Detroit -> London, ON -> Niagara Falls -> Cleveland -> Delaware. 750 miles, one day. I'm waiting until the 30th so that I can get a couple weeks of commuting on my bike after getting the carb rejetted and be sure of it's reliability. Also, going on a saturday gives me the option of stopping off at a motel for an overnight if needed. I've been thinking about it for a while, and finally decided to set a date and just do it. If this works out, then the minnesota trip is on deck.

The first hole that reached them was 3"... Burritos are about 3" wide, right? They sent all kinds of stuff down there. Oxygen, power, food, water, live video stream (not wireless) and all kinds of stuff. Heck those guys were in that mine for so long I'm surprised someone didn't open a Starbucks down there...

One time, driving around the M25 in England... I was doing well over 100mph (limit of 70) keeping pace about 15 carlengths behind another car. In my mirror I saw the sparkly blues of the Traffic Police. Put on my left turn signal, pulled over to the slow lane, and he blasted right past me. Figured he would get the car in front of me (and probably both of us). But he blasted right past that guy too. Dunno where that cop was going, but he sure as sugar needed to get there pronto. Either that or he figured we'd get dinged by a speed camera so it wasn't worth pulling us over.

You need a radar as well. Not a radar detector... A real actual honest-to-goodness radar that can see the OSHP getting all vascar on your ass.
-
If you're in a car then it's better be be redirected back into your own lanw than to cross over and hit an oncoming vehicle. On a bike, I shudder to think what would happen to the rider...

I'm pretty sure they mean Mad-Max style apocalyptic end-of-civilized-society. Like riding on 270 during rush hour. (If I needed to get from point A to point B during a natural disaster, it would be on an enduro bike, not a car. You can be pretty much assured the roads would be a parking lot)

Now let's get the 5 rescuers back out... I tell you what though... My hat's off to the rescuer who volunteered to test the capsule - and was the first down to the mine to help prep the survivors for teh ascent. That dude has big balls.

More importantly, did they still get paid so their families could keep up with bills/food/mortgages during the last 2.5 months.

New invention - A Lance on the front of the bike (Think of Knights jousting). You pull in front of a bike and you'll get the pointy end in your ear...
-
Yup - easier for them to let FlyingBrick take the hit. So to speak.
-
It would be more a case of the insurance company being able to subrogate to BlueCab. Get FlyingBrick's deductable back and keeping the accident off his record... Did you make a collision claim on an Uninsured Motorist (hit/skip) claim. Normally a UM claim requires you get a plate#. Dunno if a company name would do it...

I ride every day too. The camera is the size of a two c-cell batteries end-on-end. The wiring runs into the lockable toolbox to a recorder that activates when the key is in the engine-run position. It has a 4GB SD card that's good for a week's riding (1.5-2hrs per day) and automatically overwrites the old stuff. It's full automated, I never have to interact with it except to review video if something happens, or to test it (once a week). The camera is installed on the windshield bracket looking through the windshield. Total cost was about $250. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsWsf3VSK8w I'm on the lookout for a better camera that can handle the sun wihtout getting blinded...

Sorry to hear. Next time you talk to anyone in a position of legal knowledge, as them if helmet-cam footage of the accident would have chnged the outcome, even if the cab # is not captured. A video would absolutley prove that the accident involved a blue cab. In your situation it's your word against them and if they cover it up then you can't even prove the Blue Cab was there.

What was replaced after the bike was laid down? If almost nothing, then I'd wonder if they ever truly fixed it. If they can list a whole bunch of replaced parts then that'll give you an idea on how bad the Off was. Was it reported to Insurance? Would be a pretty bad wreck if that was the case. What are the details of the wreck? And when did it happen? If it was recent and they guy is selling the bike now then I'll bet you anything he knows something about the accident damage that he's not letting on... http://www.dps.state.oh.us/OHCrashReports/ Fairings, like paint, can cover a multitude of sins. When you replace the cracked fairing are you going to discover a damaged frame? Is there a police report on the accident? When and where did it happen? You can look up Ohio accident reports online. If he says it was just a little scuff but the police report says it had functional damage, then walk away.

If you have some of the broken bits then can you go to the taxi company and match them up with any taxi with matching damage? Probably too late now - they would have fixed the damage quietly already. Any businesses or homes in that area that might have CCTV aimed at the intersection? There's a Huntington bank on the west side of that street, no? How many cars does Blue Cab have? If it's ~200 then you're SOL, but if it's more like 5 then they should be able to allow an inspection of the vehicles... Do they run the taxis all night or can you go there after dark and see if they have a damaged one in there. I don't understand why the insurace/lawyer say you can't go after the company itself - the cars will be insurred (or self-insured) by the same entity, so does it matter exactly which one did the damage? File suit and let them produce all their cars undamaged...
-
Any chance any of those parts have been etched for anti-theft??
-
Good to hear you're ok.
-
Does the taxi company not have the ability to tell where its taxis were? They should be able to narrow it down, then look for the one with red paint in it... It's stories like that made me install a dashcam in my car. I also installed one on my bike.
