  1. One of our officers was shot in the calf with his own duty weapon while it was in the holster. It was an M&P 40. According to him (and 6 witnesses), he was unloading his cruiser at the sub after his shift and as he bent down to pick up his bags off of the ground, he bumped his holster with his arm. The witnesses stated that the gun then discharged from inside of the holster EDIT - SHOOTING HIM IN THE CALF.

Our ordinance department then stated that with the M&P, if you begin to pull the trigger but don't fire the weapon, the internals will remain in the position of the farthest position of trigger pull even when the trigger is released. They informed us that if you begin to pull the trigger but disengage, we are to unload the weapon including the one in the chamber, then reload. This will reset the internals.

Our ordinance department still called bullshit on the circumstances and could never duplicate the incident in a controlled environment. However, they said it is possible.

As a side note, when we first got the M&P, we (along with several other departments) had an issue with Blackhawk holsters. They originally had a long trigger guard and as you placed the gun into the holster, the trigger guard could get onto the trigger and depress it causing an accidental discharge.

  2. I am curious about this. I know some teams (like Notre Dame) who paint their helmets weekly and therefore would be very careful about something like this. Can you please expound on what chemicals, brands, and testing procedures that you witnessed and which ones caused failures?

I worked for Akzo Nobel (Sikkens). When I left there, there were only 2been paint manufacturers that were able to pass Riddell's testing. They were Sikkens and some industrial coating from ICI. Our system was the original Autobase system that became the Lessonal line when Autobase II came out. Riddell used a drop test (which was the standard for the industry). The drop test consisted of a series of controlled drops which had a weighted "head" raised to 3 feet then dropped. The helmet was then raised and dropped until the helmet failed. Once a failure occurred, the crack was measured and a severity of failure was determined.

Like I said, it has been a few years since I left, so things may have changed. I am sure there is someone from All American on here that can give more information.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to add that I have never heard of any team repainting their helmets weekly. It is a very time consuming process. Also, if I am not mistaken, they take the helmets out of service after 3 referbs.

  3. I'm not saying that it can't be done, I'm just saying be careful. I have watched the testing process on helmets and saw the failures first hand. I have painted helmets for people before, but my head is worth more than a cheap paint job (to me anyway).

  4. I'm too cheap to buy a new helmet when mine is only a year old and never down. However, it's mostly white and my 1 piece is black.. Anybody ever painted their helmet?

Will be a flat black, simple and classy :)

I plan on taping off the snell\DOT sticker, so it's still visible.

I know to use fine grit sandpaper to scuff the surface to help the new paint adhere, will prime too. Any other tips? Thanks guys and gals!

BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THIS! I use to be a tech rep for the largest coatings company in the world. One of my customers painted all of the college and professional football helmets, and I know for a fact a large number of paint brands deteriorate the shells of helmets. It may look fine, but the structure can be extremely compromised.

  5. Officer's should be setting the example :wtf:

I agree with you, which is why I personally don't do it. I am one that is very much into the public perception of the police and have a very hard time justifying doing things that are illegal for the public even if they are legal for us. That being said, text and cell communication is an extremely important part of doing this job. The people that are truly trying to evade us are listening to our radio transmissions and staying one step ahead of us.

  6. He should send that pic to his local sheriffs department. It'll cause the department a good verbal spanking at least.

As someone said earlier, law enforcement is exempt from the texting ban. Other than pissing off the public, it won't get him in any trouble.

  7. If I'm ticketed for texting at anytime, I no longer have a job!

We've discussed this before. However, if you are stopped for it, simply tell them that you were not texting, and that they can not see your phone. This law is almost impossible to enforce and an officer needs a warrant to check your phone. NO JUDGE IS GOING TO ISSUE A WARRANT FOR A TEXTING AND DRIVING STOP.

  8. It wouldn't surprise me if it were your mail carrier that did the damage. Ours hit skipped my Durango then started leaving me nasty grams in the mailbox saying she wouldn't deliver our mail if there was a vehicle parked in front of the house. She never acknowledged it and I never did anything about it. My Durango is 13 years old and it was only paint transfer.

  9. I gotta say that Hinderer is a dealership that runs under a car dealership mentality. Thus, it is going to be shitty when compared to most motorcycle based dealerships. If that makes sense...

I used to deal with those guys on a regular basis and they were always saying how they were going to set the world on fire and be one of the biggest and best shops in the state. Well, guess what? That never panned out and in fact, the way they perceive things is so far off base and so far away from the norm that you would get from a true motorcycle dealer that if not fixed or remedied, they are going to either be a dealer that just gets by and a tax write off for the car portion or they are going to just fold or sell.

Honda only is a bad idea anyways. But, add in the fact that they have a car mentality and it makes it worse. Now, will they have moments where they exceed others in price, etc? Sure. They all do. But, it is about consistency and these guys are constantly doing poorly...

HNW is a MUCH better choice. Talk to Dave there and tell him I sent you and you'll get the best deal. If they do not work, I can help ya find a solid Honda dealer that will be the best price, but honestly, I like it when locals buy locally and HNW would be great as when you need service, they will get you sorted much better than if you buy it a good bit of ways away and then bring to them...

This being said, I took an accident report from a young man whos dad bought himself and his brother 2012 Boulevard M50 (at the same time). Whan dad arrived, we began to talk about where he boight them. He told me that he originally went to HNW and asked what kind of deal they would give him on a pair. He said the salesman informed him that they have absolutely no ability to deal and the 2 bikes would be sticker price plus dealer prep. The dad said that he went directly to Iron Pony and they practically bent over backwards to make him a deal. Dad said he bought the pair on the spot.

  10. That's what I told the guy who got nailed. However, we were doing 120+ on some roads so jail time was justified. Plus, it was the Saturday on Memorial day weekend (five or so years ago) which meant he would have been in the slammer for the 3 day weekend before he could see a judge. The fine was $80 each, so not a big hardship by any means.

Speed alone does not constitute Reckless Opp. and is not an arrestable offense in the state of Ohio. Now, if you speed, fail to use your turn signal, and pass on a double yellow line, now you have Reckless Opp.

  11. I rode through a swarm of bees last summer on 23 S. that peppered my shield, jacket, and bike. I counted 30 bee corpses on my jacket alone. The mess was made worse when I used my glove to try and "clear" my visor. I would have hated to take those stinging little bastards in the face!

  12. Hey Cookie.

The easiest way to enjoy this sport without hassle is to get your endorsement. Then further educate yourself on the law and what is required to ride street. There are really very few requirements. Failing to follow even something you feel is trivial opens you up to many more problems and expenses. A LEO cannot just let you off on a warning if you get caught riding without an endorsement. If he/she let's you go and you kill/injure yourself or others that LEO is liable. This was unfortunately a very inconvenient and costly lesson. That said you're a big boy now and have to play by the rules. Judging by your initial comments you still have a good deal of maturing to do. Please take this opportunity to do the right thing. Go get your Temps and enroll in a Basic Rider Course. It is only $25 out of your pocket and well with your time.

Swallow your anger and percieved pride and do the right thing.

If you need help in any way just ask. I have no issue helping a fellow rider.

To be honest, I was making the no endorsement assumption. You can usually tell just by looking, who has one and who doesn't. Everyone with one knows that the main requirement in Ohio is eye protection. Find someone who doesn't have it, and you have probably found someone without an endorsement.

  13. Another mental note don't search for douche bag while on work computer.....

Never. However, I did check public access Franklin County Court View this morning (from home). Not enough information. :(

  14. I'm from Upper.....Steer Barn is good-gonna spend some money though....there is also Shotzys uptown which is good-more pocket friendly. If ur lookin for good mexican food there is Los Arcos on the other side of town.
