  1. Response I got from Pat Tiberi.... Dear Mr. Kiggins, Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. I appreciate this opportunity to correspond with you. I am shocked and heartbroken by the horrific events that happened in Newton, CT. As you know, on December 14, 2012, 20 year-old Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary and opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. Lanza also shot and killed his mother in her home. These teachers and children were taking part in one of the most important and fundamental acts we do throughout our lives by educating our youth with hopes of a brighter future. As the father of four children, my heart goes out to the families of the victims. The loss of innocent lives is devastating. This tragedy is unthinkable and requires a comprehensive examination of the facts. There are still many unanswered questions. It's time that we as a society take a broad look at the level of violence we find acceptable in our everyday lives. This examination combined with an evaluation of the effectiveness of our mental health system to preempt acts like these rather than react to them is a step in the right direction. Many senseless tragedies like these follow a pattern; a disenchanted, bright, loner with mental health issues finds a way to damage people's lives with some form of violence. The discussion about school safety is vital to addressing these recent events. Moreover, it's certainly the time to reignite the discussion about the role the federal government has in supporting a strong mental health treatment system and working to ensure our communities and our children are safe. You may be interested to read the attached opinion editorial from The Columbus Dispatch by Dr. John V. Campo, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at The Ohio State University and Chief of Psychiatry at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center, who calls on Congress and the nation to get serious about the relationship between severe mental illness and violence. I believe that before we enact additional gun control measures we must start enforcing those that are already on the books. You may be interested to know that the Brady Act of 1993 requires Federal Firearms Licensees to request background checks on individuals attempting to receive a firearm. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is managed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This system already runs database checks on criminal records. Rest assured that this is a matter that I and my colleagues take very seriously. I will closely review legislation that addresses these issues should they be considered by the United States House of Representatives. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. If I may be of assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Patrick J. Tiberi The attached letter that was included basically stated that not all people suffering from mental illness are potential killers, and that they shouldn't be stagmatized as such. But it went on to say that the mental illness thread with all these mass shootings can't be ignored, and that more research needs done in this area. The letter didn't mention gun control at all, which I would say is appropriate considering the author is a PhD in Psychology at OSU, and probably doesn't consider themselves qualified to discuss gun control.
  2. So wait a minute, you're saying that people that are on anti-depressants are more likely to commit suicide because of the drugs they are on? Do you know why people are prescribed anti-depressants? Because they are depressed. You will also find that people suffering from depression who are not medicated also have a pretty high suicide rate.

    Scope??

I've owned three Vortex scopes, an SWFA Super Sniper, a Leupy Mk 4, and an IOR Valdata. Vortex are the best value for the money out there today. They are made in Japan, but carry a lifetime transferrable warranty. Plenty of reticle and features choices, and has a solid offering at basically every price point. Their customer service is excellent as well.
  8. What I was told is that you can have a mag with more than a 30 rd capacity, as long as no more than 30 rds are loaded in the weapon at any time.
  9. That's a tragically expensive mistake.
  10. I've recently developed a serious hard on for Ithaca 37's. If you're considering a Mossberg do yourself a favor and consider a classic Ithaca. You can get a perfect functioning Ithacas for less than $300, and unless you break it it will never be worth less than when you bought it. The older models also have the slam-fire feature, which is a blast.
  11. Youre supposed to clean and gut em? Oops.
  12. I trimmed about 500 rds of .223 and 100 rds of 308 by hand today. Damn i need a giraud.
  13. For an entry rifle you can't go wrong with either the savage or rem. My experience with savage was a 10 fcp which was dead nuts accurate, but had some quality issues requiring it to go back to the factory. A brand that hasn't been mentioned that also deserves some consideration is Tikka. They make some great entry rifles as well.

    I use this list.... http://www.gunshows-usa.com/ohio_gun_shows.shtml
  15. That's a full set of leathers, not just pants. They'd fit you perfect.
  16. Treat yourself to a nice XMas present, practically brand new set of Taichi leathers. Make me an offer.
  17. Here you go... http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/07/jim-barrett/reloading-a-costbenefit-analysis-part-two-2/ "168 grain Sierra Match King bullet – the gold standard of match grade ammo." His words, not mine. I'll keep arguing as long as you two keep being wrong.
  18. I didn't qualify my statement regarding 168 SMKs with "1000 yrd shooting", alone. In fact, the OP said 500 yrds max. I said it was the gold standard for all .308s. I stand behind that statement. Keep mincing words, getting ridiculous.
  19. I've hit lots of times with my .308 as well. I'm not saying its impossible. But if you are like me, and most other people that shoot there, we are content through 50 rounds at it and calling it a good day if we hit it 10 times. But to be first shot accurate and precise you gotta do better than that, and it ain't going to happen with most factory guns, Rem700 included. But for the OP, it probably doesn't matter. My argument is that a factory Rem700 or any Barrett .50 is considered a precision weapon. Barrett .50s were never meant to be precision, and a most factory Rem700s don't even carry an accuracy guarantee. 1-2 MOA is about as good as you can expect.
  20. 168 Federal Gold Metal Match with the Sierra Match King (SMK) 168 gr bullet. Works very well in almost any .308 rifle that it goes in = Gold Standard .308 match cartridge. Your argument is moot, because I don't know anyone who will argue .308 is a gold standard caliber for 1000 yd shooting.
  21. Seriously, google 'gold standard match 308 ammo' and tell me if you find anyone that refers to the 175gr. The 175gr is great for rifle with a high twist rate shooting at targets at the outer range of what a 308 is capable of. But for pure versatility and its ability to perform well in damn near anything out there, the 168 its great, not to mention cheaper than 175. I tend to stay away from remanufactured ammo in my bolt gun. If it didn't come from a factory or my press i don't trust the consistency of it.
