I'm all about educating kids about guns, and getting them exposed early in life. Every kid is different, as is every parent, but.... there are limits, and 3 years old is too young. These things weren't created to be toys, they were created to be lethal weapons. You wouldn't hand a 3 yr old a grenade and teach him to just not pull the pin. At any rate, this certainly doesn't even really matter in this case. A loaded, ready to fire weapon was left within reach of a 3yr old boy even though there was at least three adults in the house. And for their mistake, this boy lost his life. Lock up your shit.

I know what I meant to say, and I said what I meant. Sure you can teach a 3yr old to not handle a gun. You can also teach a dog to play the piano, but that doesn't mean he's going to do it. Lock up your shit, end of story. Kids this age can't be expected to be responsible for their own safety regardless of how much teaching you think you've provided them. And when dealing with guns, a simple oops can mean someone's life. Lock up your shit.

I did the class the NASR, more pricey than the others but your access to the ranges, a variety of range guns, and lots of ammo kind of helps to offset the cost. They do a good job with the class and cover all the topics.

Open carry does have an advantage in regards to the act of drawing a weapon. But IMO there's a lot more to "Tactical Advantage" than JUST your ability to draw quickly. On the topic of overall self defense, if you look at the total pros and cons of carrying open vs concealed I think you have tough time arriving at the conclusion that carrying open is a better overall solution than concealed. But the most critical self-defense method that has and will ever exist is prevention, avoiding situations in which the likelihood of an incident increases. Prevention can range from parking in well-lit areas all the way to not wearing your most valuable/visible jewelry in places which make you a target. In regards to prevention, I believe the Open Carry fails miserably. It is an unwise, narrow focused, risky assumption that your visible weapon will be a deterent to an attack. Visibility of your weapon has just as much likelihood to make you a target vs the other guy that doesn't have a visible weapon. At the least, having a weapon visible draws unecessary attention to yourself. All of this can be avoided by tucking it under your shirt. It's worth the .5 sec or whatever it will cost me to draw from concealed. Never assume that you will see your attacker coming, and that he won't have a weapon of his own.

How's that a double standard at all? I CHOOSE to not do business with either because I don't want to do business with an org who's values disagree with mine. Seems pretty consistent to me. For this I was called stupid. And for this CRB is also stupid for suggesting he post an ad in a paper to protest this guy's carwash. I mean, its one thing to say I'll never open a checking account with BofA because of their policy. It's a whole other thing to say that you would take out a whole page ad in a local newspaper in protest of a local businessman, a small business owner who doesn't have TARP to fall on when things get tough. That's just ridiculous. And for CRB to suggest it is completely hypocritical, that is unless he's willing to admit that his suggestion is just as "stupid" as mine. I'm not even against Open Carry, to each his own. But any argument that says that Open Carry has tactical and safety benefits beyond concealed carry is fooling themselves.

I do not believe that open carry = deterrent in every scenario. I do not believe that open carry is a better option than concealed in regards to improving your ability to defend yourself in a critical incident.

Based on the experience that I would never walk out my door with a gun on me in plain sight. I would feel extraordinarily conspicuous, like I'm making myself a target or at least creating greater likelihood for confrontation, and putting myself and anyone around me at unnecessary risk. Therefore when I carry I do it concealed, and I feel warm with comfort in knowing that I've got a defense option that no one knows about.

I don't know what the definition of "common criminal" is, much less what this person is or isn't thinking, or if they are thinking at all.... that's a big reason they are criminals. You seem to have this perception that when you open carry you have established some sort of inpenetrible shield around that protects you from all scenarios. I think that at the least you have made your self conspicuous, which creates a greater risk. I guarantee that if you and I were walking side by side through Walmart, you openly carrying and me concealed that nobody is going to notice me. And guess what, I've got a gun too and I have just as much capability of protecting myself as you. The cons to open carry far outweigh the real and practical benefits, especially when considering that you can avoid almost all the cons by carrying concealed.

Why is he going to try to steal your wife's jewelry when he could steal your gun instead? You don't think your gun is something a criminal wants? Your making a lot of assumptions when you think that a criminal is going to avoid you just because you've got a gun on your hip. You don't have 360 degrees of vision, something tells me that if a criminal wants your gun he's going to have a go and take it. If you didn't have it open and visible they'd never know you had one. When I was shopping for my AR (Colt LE6930) I went to Blackwing first b/c their website said they had one in stock. This was towards the end of the assault rifle scare ('08?) when you could find these rifles online for around $1200 but no stores had them for that price. Blackwing had 1 and was asking $1800 for it. Vances had dozens, and was asking $1200. I gave up the notion of buying any guns from Blackwing a long time ago. It is a nice place though, and the staff seems pretty friendly.

5 times the price if you buy it at Blackwing.
