  1. The information I have read in automotive magazines have the usage of automated driver systems related to over the road truck use first. FedEx and UPS may be the first to utilize this technology, eliminating cost, versus you and I driving places doesn't save much cost, since most of us are not professional drivers. Professional drivers are paid to drive and are limited on the number of hours per day they can drive. If there is a desolate area on a cross country truck haul, the system could be utilized, the driver rests and is alerted only in an emergency situation. His hours behind the wheel are extended and the company profits from this automated driver system. The liability would rest with the system provider, the trucking company and of course the insurance companies of both. These systems use GPS, on board computers, software systems, external independent surrounding vehicle information, etc. Like I stated I have read only a few articles on the subject and these are complicated system deriving navigational information from multiple sources.
  2. That does look like a F*ckin Race Bike, are they adding a class for those at motogp?
  3. Great ride today, thanks for letting me ride with the "gotta be back by 5:00 group". NinjaDoc you planned a good route for the ride!

  7. Comfy couch?..... I did ride a Gold Wing once and it was a Lazy Boy on two wheels! If I was going to ride across the country (bucket list) the Wing would be my choice.
  8. As long as someone wants to ride any motorcycle, they can ride with me. There are all kinds of people in this world there are all sorts of bikes for different riders. Now, the ape hanger thing...... who in the world would want those?! Hehehehe
  9. I rented a Harley Heritage soft tail to ride from Fort Myers to Key West and back, because someone didn't feel comfortable riding the Harley, so I let them ride my Yam FZ1. My impressions; it is way underpowered at 68 HP for a bike weighing around 800 lbs. The braking compared to the FZ1..... dangerous, you would need a long time to try and stop in an emergency. Changing direction in an emergency seemed to take much longer when compared to a sport touring bike. Scrapped the foot boards on curving exit ramps which was very surprising. A couple of positives, very low center of gravity, the seat height is low for shorter people and the HD club thingy is probably nice for many people who don't know many friends who ride motorcycles. JMHO!
  10. I hit a deer in April 2008 and had all the gear, FF helmet, armored jacket, gloves, boots. Pitch dark at 9:00PM on a two lane road with poor lighting. Hit the deer then a mailbox, the front wheel stopped in a drain ditch and I landed about 15 feet from the bike in the drain ditch. Bike was totaled (see photos), I had broken collar bone, broken shoulder blade, a few stiches from a jacket grommet cutting into my arm and a bunch of bruises. ATGATT for me, if I didn't have the gear, can't believe I would have escaped with minimal medical problems. According to Wisconsin DOT 2% of car-deer accidents end up in human fatalities versus 84.9% of motorcycles-deer encounters end up in fatalities. BTW, the nurses and doc's in the ER at Metro General cheered when they found I had wore all the gear, a week earlier a MC-deer fatality occurred with a rider without the gear. I beat the odds.
  11. True, but putting a banana in your back pocket makes in smooshy, besides how would people know you are a TRUE cyclist without a Cliff bar....hehehehe
  12. Happy bday Derek, nice ride along the lake and some good scenery! Good times
  13. Papa, this article in Rider Magazine may the reason you are pretty confused. The attached article compares 555 with US-129 with a straight face, I have rode both roads and I agree with you, it's hard to compare. There are many other roads I would rather ride in SEO than 555. Buckeye Back Roads - Rider Mag.pdf
  14. Derek thanks for organizing the ride and Brian's family for cooking the food for us. One of the highlights of the ride was crossing paths with the Hate group and our group giving them the middle finger, with them saluting us back! Great day of riding.

Went to a 90th birthday party today and drove back to Cleveland. Daughter receives masters degree tomorrow and party after the graduation. Lots of miles this weekend!

  20. Just because a bunch of guys talk about penis shaped foods, a sausage fest in a garage, all of a sudden we are gay? Ok, what's the date?
  21. I have a Garmin Edge 705 and it is over kill, I have used the mapping function once in 8 years, while on the bike (Lost in California) the Garmin Edge 500 ($180) doesn't have mapping and is the way to go. The 500 tracks any metric you want; time of day, distance, HR, average speed, MPH, cadence, grade, ride time and many other metrics. Download the Garmin 500 to your computer and see all the rides you have ever done with maps displaying the ride, with all the data tracked, drop you mouse over any area on the map and see all the data at that point of the ride. Also using the Garmin app you can see other riders, and comparison like Strava, although I don't use that function.
