This is the 2.8 V6, correct? Use a timing light or a strobe, watch the spray pattern of your injectors, see if one is spraying really weird. Also, how many miles are on the beast? Perhaps the timing chain jumped a tooth. (not sure if the 2.8s had nylon timing gears like some of the olds V8s).

You could put on an overdrive pulley on the alternator to return it to its normal speed. It would be alot cheaper, and most likely use less HP than trying to put a larger alternator on it with heavier windings. FWIW, alot of the high amp alternators on the market have a modified regulator that puts out more ampreage at normal driving RPM, but sacrifice low RPM output to achive this.
