skyline drive is about 100 miles long, then where it ends at rockfish gap is the beginning of the blue ridge parkway. from there its about 470 miles south until it ends in cherokee, NC. so thats almost 600 miles right there. google maps says its about 400 miles (on the freeway) from columbus to front royal, VA which is the start of skyline drive. then it says 500 or so miles from cherokee to columbus... again on the freeway. so thats 1500 miles right there. add a few more, if you want to stick to the state routes/back roads and not get on the freeway. also, the speed limit on the blue ridge parkway is 45MPH, and 35MPH on skyline drive. if they catch you speeding on skyline, you WILL get a ticket, in addition to a stern lecture about speeding on a road that is frequented by wildlife, bicycles and hikers. plus, its a federal offense (as its a national park) so if you dont pay it, you could get in some serious shit probably. you can go to www.gmap-pedometer.com and plot the route you wish to take, and it will give you the milage of it. if I were doing it, id take no less than a week. probably two. there is tons of shit to see and do around there, especially if you like to do nature stuff like hiking and camping.

the claims were that saddam RESTARTED his WMD programs, not that he simply possessed them. of course there was SOME chemical weapons there. if you recall, WE GAVE THEM TO HIM in the 80s. http://www.awolbush.com/rumsfeld_saddam.jpg the claims were a) he started a new program (untrue) and b) that he was giving support to al-qaeda, or somehow tied into 9/11 (also untrue) al qaeda IS running wild there. now. they were not running wild in iraq before 2003 though. if we were TRULY concerned with WMD's then why didnt we do anything with North Korea? we KNOW they have a nuclear program. its not just speculation. they dont need to bring people over here now. they are happy with us being in iraq. they WANT us there. so does iran. probalby china too. they want us to fight in iraq because in doing so, we are depleting our fiscal and physical resources.

i like how you try to use "democrat" as some sort of insult. didnt you ever learn that ad hominem is a fallacious argument? being opposed to the iraq war does not make one a democrat. there are a number of members of congress who are republican and opposed to the war. walter jones comes to mind. so does ron paul. although one could argue that paul is pretty much a republican only in party affiliation. his views are much more libertarian than anything. john duncan is another. william f. buckley even said "One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed...it's important that we acknowledge in the inner councils of state that it (the war) has failed, so that we should look for opportunities to cope with that failure" buckley is a staunch conservative, yet if he is opposed to the war in iraq does that mean he is a democrat? ^ hit the nail on the head. there are issues that i agree with republicans on and there are issues i agree with democrats on. as for what i would have done (as if anyone can TRULY say what they would have done. i dont think anyone would know unless they are in that position) i probably would have done what bush did in AFGHANISTAN. i was 100% in support of the invasion of afghanistan and the overthrow of the taliban. however, i wouldnt have stopped half way through, and started a conflict in iraq... since, ya know... IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11. i wouldnt have stopped in afghanistan until we had OBL's head on a pike... but OBL is still out there somewhere. the invasion of iraq was decided BEFORE 9/11. "after all, this is the guy who tried to kill my daddy" if we truly needed to go in there, then the president should use the proper channels. congress should declare war and the UN should approve as well. there is a reason that congress is the sole power authorized to declare war. its called "checks and balances". so no one branch of the government can become too strong. further, adherence by the U.S. and other member states to the UN Charter and to other international treaties is NOT A CHOICE, but a legal obligation; exercising military power in violation of the UN Charter undermines the rule of law and is illegal vigilantism on an international scale.

another trip i plan on taking (albeit probably in my car) is north through detroit into canada, go around lake huron, and come back into the states in sault ste. marie. then hit up the UP for a while, then come back south through wisconsin, through green bay and take the ferry across from manitowoc to ludington, then back home

ive been wanting to do a trip this year too... i was thinking of heading east into WV and then into VA, and going south on skyline drive through shenandoah natl park, then taking the blue ridge parkway down until the end, then tooling around the smokies and maybe hit up the dragon, then a leisurely ride back north through tennessee and kentucky. if i had my way, id try to do the whole thing sticking to the state routes, and not getting on the freeway at all.

did anyone see this? there was a little blurb on the news about it too (ch 6) i drove by and they had the exit closed, and there was a bike lying in the ditch apparently he was coming westbound on 161, went to exit on sunbury rd, and was going too fast and missed that turn there. on a side note, that turn IS pretty vicious... the limit is 45 there, and even in a car, 45 is too fast for it. they said on the news he wasnt wearing a helmet (i knew that cuz it was a harley lol) and that he was in critical condition...

IIRC, if its an outlandish selling price, they MAY investigate it. like if you buy a ferrari for 100 dollars or something lol. i think that putting a lower price on there is something that everyone does. i dont think ive bought a vehicle (save from a dealer) and not lied about the purchase price. i dont think ive sold one either where the buyer didnt lie lol

i think its possible, but its not going to happen overnight. its not oing to happen in 5 years... id say give it 30, and it probably will have a good start... but are we going to stay there for 30 years? CAN we stay there for 30 years? will we be able to afford it in both the monteary realm AND the political/social realm?
-
i dont know where i ever said i was a democrat, but w/e... perhaps you remember the invasion of afghanistan? that was our response for 9/11... however, we STILL dont have OBL... as for iraq:
-
yeah, maybe it would be bad to leave, but it was bad to go in the first place. and besides, we have to leave SOMETIME. i mean we cant stay there forever.

are those the leftovers from the shit we gave him in the 80s? the stuff with a shelf life of 3-5 years, that today, is about as harmful as a can of bug spray? the claim was that he reconstituted his WMD program, which was entirely untrue. we went to find all of these new weps he was developing. we arent talking about him supporting terrorists in general. its about his support for al-qaeda. ya know... the ones responsible for 9/11.. the reason given as to why we invaded in the first place. hell, WE support terrorist groups. WE supported OBL when reagan was in office WE put saddam into power WE have a very long history of supporting terrorist orginazations... does that mean the rest of the world should come invade us? WE are currently supporting a terrorist group in iraq because they dont like iran. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/mek.htm http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=b91a0623da031a4eac9e9ae16d5fda5d http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2006/61313.htm this is a terrorist group in iraq and iran, which has killed americans in the past. and WE are currently giving them support and protection. thats specious reasoning. by that logic i could say that this rock i have here keeps tigers away. how does it work? well i havent seen a tiger since i got it, so therefore it must be working great! the war in iraq isnt going to stop any of that from happening here. the iraqis were not coming after us. look, im not saying that saddam wasnt a dick. far from it. however, the reasoning that we were given as to why we were invading iraq was TOTAL BULLSHIT. there was no collaboration b/w saddam and al-Qaeda. there was no connection b/w saddam and 9/11. there was no new WMD program. saddam never gave aid to al-Qaeda. he tried to kill their #2 man when he was in iraq. WMD and 9/11 had NOTHING to do with (read this part closely) why we invaded iraq. a separate issue is how they sold the invasion to the public. that had a lot to do with WMD.

that does fucking suck though. id kick the shit out of that little turn.

i agree. we went in on bullshit pretenses... going in after "terrorist camps". keep in mind, these "terrorsit camps" were NONEXISTANT unitl AFTER we invaded. i hesitate to use the word "quagmire" but it does come to mind... there were never any terrorist training camps in Iraq, pre-invasion. there was no al-qaeda in iraq pre-invasion. saddam offered no aid to the terrorists, and had absolutely zero contacts with any said terrorists. When al-zarqawi was in an Iraqi, saddam attempted to hunt him down and kill him, according to an NIE that came out last year. they found these things out after studying millions of documents from saddam's files that they recovered. saddam was a dictator, and the last thing he would do is let a terrorist organization in his country to take things over, and give them an ounce of power. but that won't stop the bush administration from repeating these lies. Just weeks ago cheney was on meet the press talking about hos al-zarqawi was in iraq pre-invasion, and how that justified everything, even though we knew there was no operational link between iraq and al-qaeda... ask george tenet.
