Well, I convinced my wife that the Buick Roadmaster is a great idea. Unfortunately, the two cheap wagons I called/texted were both some flaky motherfuckers. One was "Oh yeah, the A/C needs recharged", the other was a dealer who didn't have maintenance records and had no idea the history of the car. Craylist gon' cray... For emphasis: Looking for a good, cheap car on the used market is not as easy as it looks...nor is it worth the hassle/frustration. Gonna talk to the wife about expectations this weekend...

Kerry, I share some of your thoughts...honestly, my kids are great but I didn't even think about driving with them all the way down. When we took the Passat down it was just my wife and I. Definitely agree with the shakedown, hence why I feel crunchtime to get the car is now. This is all for nothing unless I get kinks worked out by driving it DD for the next couple of weeks.

I really want the Roadmaster wagon. I'd get it and cut springs...put some Moons on the wheels and rock out the beach cruiser. Gonna have a talk with the wifey.

Hey, Craig...I definitely looked at Autotrader...been told that Car Source is an auction mill; should avoid it if at all possible. I have a line on a 2004 Cavalier LS sedan (through a friend) with 105k miles that the owner would let go for less than $1500. He just got a new car and is looking to unload this one...may go that way. I'm not a big fan of Cavvy's but it seems like a really good new-enough, no-rust, lower-mile option for the dough.

+1 for Best One. Once you see them putting snow tires on your car in your driveway, you'll question the need of ever going back to a traditional tire store again. :thumbup:

Whilst searching, I'm realizing the biggest turnoff when I see it in the pics is not rust... It's a "Black Ice" pine tree air freshener. Just screams low class to me. Clean yourself or your car more often. Stop smoking INSIDE the car. Problem solved.

Back in 2005 when I first moved to Naples, I drove my $1100 1985 Chevy C10 "Heavy Half" (305/4spd) tee-ruk with no working fuel gauge and an upright piano in the bed from Columbus to Naples 18 hours non-stop. In 2008, when we were moving back to Columbus, I put my '95 Vette on a U-Haul trailer and loaded the bed of my 1982 C20 (6.2L diesel/TH400) with tools, chemicals, and everything the moving company didn't or wouldn't haul. I drove 8 hours to Atlanta, stayed overnight, and finished the drive to Columbus. Both trips were without issue. I say this not to jinx myself , but to justify that it can be done! :fuckyeah: F**KING LOVE ROADKILL.

Just to clarify...the whole idea is to get an OHIO car (yes, I get the rust...but it'll be way easier to re-register with the Passat's Ohio plates than FL tags) and drive it the full distance from OH to Atlanta to FL. Thank you for the suggestions so far!

I appreciate both of your perspectives on this. Agreed...if it's at a WAL*FART, I'm considering that ground as something I feel NO NEED to defend. I'll buy my distilled water and wheel cleaner and move on. If those gashes want to fight it out on my front lawn, I will instantly feel threatened for my life and the well-being of my family and take them down with the quickness. :bangbang::gabe:

Next month, I'm driving through ATL for a famiry get-together, then on to our condo in FL. My '00 Passat GLX (180k miles) is slowly dying at our condo in FL (exhaust flexpipe broke, clutch is slipping). If you combine these two items, it's easy to see that my wife and I would rather buy a better-condition car here in OH, transfer registration, and drive it through ATL on to FL to replace the Passat instead of a pricey rental and airfare. Does anyone have/know of options? The purpose of this thread is to see if anyone hasn't put a car on the market. I've gone through a lot of CrazyList ads and would like to avoid the buy-here-pay-here auction-flip junk...would prefer a private owner that's looking to unload. Car would preferably be somewhat reliable and have working A/C. All it has to do is survive the trip to FL, and it will only see maybe a few hundred miles a year in Naples after that: local driving to restaurants/stores/errands. No need for a van or AWD or anything like that.

Does it have polyurethane bushings (or split factory rubber ones) in the rear suspension? They weren't kidding when they said the interior would get louder. Steve-O and I replaced our diff bushings in our V's with poly units, it's quiet in 1st, 2nd, 3rd...but noticably louder in 4th and 5th. Sounds like a similar situation where the noise is only in a certain gear/RPM/MPH range or frequency...
