  1. I decided to use 1 3/4" primaries due to tight packaging and my target primary length is 38". Longer than most headers but this will be a road course car and torque out of the corner is more important than dyno numbers. First step, locate the collectors in the tunnel. I made a little jig that allowed me to slide them fore and aft to get all the tubes where they need to go yet keep them as short as possible, 38" is a long way when crossing side to side.

  2. I should start with an explanation of what 180 degree headers are to those who are not familiar with them. We all know that muscle car sound, as awesome as it may be it is created by uneven exhaust pulses through the collectors of typical American V8 engines, for that matter all American V8s except for the Latest Mustang GT350 and GT350R which use a flat plane crankshaft. If you look at the firing order of an LS for example, 18726543, you can see there are double stacked pulses in one bank as a pulse is skipped in the opposing bank. This gives the rumble we are all familiar with. By rearranging the primary header pipes in the collectors, 180 degree headers can space the exhaust pulses in even increments. This changes the sound to that of exotic flat plane crankshaft V8s. To make this happen, two primaries from one bank share the same collector as two primaries from the opposing bank. And the other two from each bank enter into the other collector. In all V8s I am familiar with, it is the center two from one bank and the outer two from the other bank in one collector and vice versa. Due to having to have four of the primary pipes cross sides, packaging 180 degree headers is impossible in most cars unless the primaries are made to a length way longer than optimal. Unless the engine is rear mounted or you can completely ditch the passenger seat, there is no option for 180 degree headers.

Exhaust note, in many cases is more important to me than what a car looks like. Graciously sculpted panels and the perfectly detailed paint applied to them can certainly entertain my eyes for hours. But when the ignition switch is turned and the pipes fire off with a harmony that pleases the ears, that's when the true appreciation of an automotive creation wins my heart.

I first heard the exotic music of 180 degree headers at of all places, the redneck festival that was Columbus Motor Speedway. There was a single late model stock car in a field of 20 or so racing in the A main feature race rocking the pipes that transformed the muscle of the small block Chevrolet under it's hood into a symphony of audible perfection. I took notice and never forgot that wonderful noise. 25 years later I built a set of 180 degree headers for my Howe TA2 chassis. It was not the easy route but it was possible so it had to be done. I had to have that sound for myself!

Now, I have a C5 Z06 in my possession. Because the transmission is located at the rear, I figured I could make the same thing happen in but under it. Without a transmission in the way, the collectors could be placed where it typically is found in most cars.

  3. Years ago, 15 or more, a friend was upgrading his house furnace to a high efficiency unit. He gave me the old one that was in perfect working condition. I set in the corner of my 24' x 30' garage, tied into the gas line in the house, and made a couple of elbows to aim the air towards the center of the garage.

Nice and quiet, no need to refill or exchange propane bottles, no stink. I keep it at 60 degrees and turn it up to 70 when I'm out here working.

  4. One 215/65/15 Sumic GT65A. Nearly new 9/32" tread depth. FREE, just get it out of my garage.

Four 225/45/17 BFG R1 DOT slicks. Plenty of meat left on them, old date codes but always stored in climate controlled garage. FREE, just get them out of my garage.

  5. Thanks for the kind words gents.

I'm horrible at selling things and left out so many details. Below is somewhat of a list to some questions asked,

Brakes are stock TII brakes using Hawk DTC60 and DTC30 pads.

Suspension is Stance coilovers with either 10k/8k or 8k/6k springs. 10k/8k are currently installed.

It has a clutch type TII limited slip that has been shimmed fro slightly more preload. 4:10 ratio.

Stock T5 transmission. Also, I have a spare T5 that comes with the car that functions but could use a rebuild.

Engine was rebuilt spring of 2015 and has approximately 30 hours on it.

    -.030 over.

    -Balanced rotating assembly.

-Stock rods with polished beams and resized with ARP rod bolts.

-Intense stage II cam, also balanced. I have access to cool toys, so why not.

    -LS7 lifters and valve springs

    -Double roller timing chain

-Ported heads with polished chambers. I can't remember the flow numbers off the top of my head but do have the flow sheet somewhere.

    -Intense chromoly pushrods.

-Added 1/2 quart capacity to oil pan.

-Added approximately 50c.i. to the intake manifold plenum for better high rpm.

-Upper and lower intake ported and port matched.

-Mildly ported throttle body. According to my tuner, it could use a larger one.

-Full, equal length headers with merge collectors.

    Much more I'm forgetting.

I built the rollcage above and beyond minimum requirements and added jacking points that extend through the floor for easy side to side jacking.

A few aluminum tidbits that you may or may not be able to see in the pictures.

    -Vented hood

    -Wheel spats

-Undertray from front TII lip to front axle centerline.

Besides the spare transmission, it comes with two rear bumper covers, driver and passenger doors, multiple S5 body mouldings, front and rear hubs, front and rear control arms, aluminum hood that needs a little work, hatches, TII side skirts, etc.....

  6. It's time to let Black Betty go and work on the new car.

    The basics,

Built from a rust free NC car.

    NASA log book.

1 of 1100 GTUs's, most desirable FC to build for track use, no sunroof and all the TII goodies.

Clean Ohio title and still street legalish, no headlights, horn, or OE DOT seat belts.

Well sorted, race ready, needs nothing.

248/249 rwhp/tq tuned by the man Dyno Brian. Should be making more now with the underdrive pulleys, less restrictive exhaust, and now that it's broken in but I do not have the numbers for proof. Brian also believes more power can be had with a less restrictive throttle body.

She started out racing in NASA Performance Touring D and has multiple wins in that class. A couple of years ago The folks from Road and Track and I started running her in the American Endurance Racing enduros, http://americanenduranceracing.com/ It took some development time but we came away with a podium finish at Mid Ohio swinging way above our weight. Even embarrassed an IMSA team passing both of their Porsche Caymens in the rain.

In AER trim on 180 tread ware street tires she has run a best of 140.8 on Mid Ohio club course and 214.2 at Watkins Glen. Figure 2-3 seconds faster on slicks.

She comes with multiple spares and enough rotors and pads for a full season. Two sets of 17x9 wheels, two sets of 17x8 wheels and some older BFG slicks and Hoosier rain tires.

This was his secondary boat that he used to put around the marina where he keep his cabin cruiser and took to Canada a couple of times. Very low hours and well kept. Stored indoors when not in use. If I remember correctly it ran 27mph with two people on board.

    PM me for contact info.

  8. I highly doubt anyone here has heard this song, and if they have, it is a very fuzzy of memories.

And it isn't the Rolling Stone, it's Road and Track. And, it's not the cover, far from, but still pretty cool to see my name and mention of my car in one of the magazines I spent every study hall in high school reading every word of instead of doing the school work I should have been doing.

Photo sucks of the page 34/35 of the March/April Road and Track.

  9. For sale or want to buy.

Last race of the season I killed one of my 17x9 5Zigen wheels. It is not repairable. So I am both looking to purchase another or two or three and offering the three remaining for sale. These are discontinued and I cannot find a replacement. If you can, I will be happy to pay a finder's fee.

Specs, 17x9 35mm offset 5x114.3 bolt pattern in flat black.

Condition, Good. Straight and true, no leaks, no gouges, no curb rash. But the finish is not the best.

    Tires not included. $350

  10. Also, on the tech subject. I'm thinking about seeing what my little road race car could muster in the 1/4 mile. Might just be the safest car to show up but it lacks side windows. It does have a window net and center net. Any chance it could pass tech?

And is the entry fee per driver or car? Wouldn't mind seeing what the tow vehicle runs.

  11. Me too, it's a convenient location for me as well since I regularly drive across Columbus on 70 for work. It makes it easy to stop there on my weekly Research Alloys trip.

Tinman, BTW, do you remember someone dropping off a 2JZ intake manifold years ago to screw around with intake manifold designs?

    Just wondering haha.

Yes I do! Still sitting here...

  12. Glad you went with Praxair.

For anyone else looking at this thread, do not buy from DeLille! We have been having numerous problems with their 75/25. 1 of 3 bottles is not mixed and is not useable.

  13. Mike at M&M can be hard to reach over the phone. He prefers to talk to customers himself and not employ someone just to answer the phone. He can't drop what he is doing everytime the phone rings but he will absolutly stop to help anyone that comes through the door.

IMO, it's worth the trip to M&M to talk to Mike. Always learn something from our discussions.

  14. Bumping this thread for anyone else needing such services.

Tim (NHRATA) did some fantastic work. Much more than I expected and for a great price. Top notch quality and a pleasure to do business with. I highly recommend him for any flow bench or port work!

    Thanks again Tim!
